Aside from the antics of the Busch brothers and Tony Stewart's uncensored comments, some of the biggest controversies in NASCAR are directed at the tires used on the cars. Goodyear can't do anything about Kurt, Kyle or Tony, but it is looking improve the quality of its rubber by introducing a new type of racing tires for this weekend's event at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Developed from the same technology behind Goodyear's Assurance TripleTred passenger tire, the new Multi-Zone Tread Technology debuting in NASCAR uses multiple rubber compounds in the hopes of optimizing performance, safety and durability. Goodyear says that Atlanta is a good test track for the new technology since it has an abrasive surface, long race length and high vehicle speeds. The new compound will only be used on the right-side tires only (click on the image for a larger view of what's a work here).

Goodyear Debuts New NASCAR Tire Technology in Atlanta
Newest Goodyear Eagle race tire features Multi-Zone Tread Technology to
handle the challenging conditions of Atlanta Motor Speedway

AKRON, Ohio, August 29, 2013 – As drivers take to the track for this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, they'll be riding on a newly designed Goodyear Eagle race tire with roots in consumer tire technology.

Goodyear's new right-side tire for Atlanta marks the introduction of its Multi-Zone Tread Technology, which combines two different rubber compounds in a single tread to face the conditions of one of NASCAR's most demanding speedways. And while Goodyear often applies what it learns in the high-performance world of NASCAR to the development of consumer tires, this time technology was transferred from the street to the track.

"Atlanta is one of our biggest challenges from a tire perspective," said Stu Grant, Goodyear's general manager of worldwide racing. "The abrasive track surface causes extremely high wear, while the length and layout promote very high speeds."

To face this challenge, Goodyear engineers set out to develop a tire capable of offering both superior traction and wear-two typically opposing properties. The solution was found in Goodyear's Assurance TripleTred All-Season passenger tire. The Assurance TripleTred pioneered the concept of multiple tread zones in auto tires, featuring three distinct zones for superior traction in wet, icy and dry conditions.

"Developing the right tire for each NASCAR track always requires finding a good balance between traction and durability," said Grant. "The goal of our new Multi-Zone Tread is to help us offer drivers more of both."

To accomplish this, Goodyear's newest NASCAR tire utilizes two unique tread zones. An Endurance Zone on the tire's inside shoulder features a firmer compound to help manage wear for enhanced durability on the track. The outside two-thirds of the tread makes up the tire's Traction Zone, which uses a more tractive tread compound to help increase grip for superior handling.

Goodyear has tested the Multi-Zone Tread tire several times over the past year. The most recent test took place in Atlanta earlier this month, where 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams put the tire through its paces with very positive results and feedback.

"Teams were able to tune their cars to the tire and get the balance of the car right," said Grant. "Drivers seemed pleased with the performance during the test, and we expect similar results for the races this weekend."

Following this weekend's races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Goodyear will also consider tires featuring a Multi-Zone Tread for additional tracks on the NASCAR schedule.

This is the second notable example of how Goodyear has transferred street technology to its racing tires. For the 2009 racing season, the tire maker introduced a wet weather radial for use in the NASCAR Nationwide Series that has a tread pattern based on the "street" Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season tire.

      They've got to do something, but I don't know how well this is going to work. A big part of the "blowing tires" problem isn't Goodyear's tire compounds. It's NASCAR crew chiefs' tendencies to lean the tire past recommended camber settings -- the bottom of the right-front tire out from the centerline, the bottom of the left-front tire in -- for handling advantage. While the dual-compound tires should help edge wear, the open question is whether this introduces a safety margin or just more incentive to lean the camber angles further until the tires blow. For a racing series that seems determined to mandate, regulate and regiment just about every part and setting in the car for "the good of the show", I have no idea why NASCAR does nothing in an area that's been amply demonstrated as a legitimate safety issue and not mandated maximum camber angles for the right-front and left-front tires.

        Sounds a lot like what's been going on with Pirelli in F1...where many of the teams were exceeding recommended camber angles and even running rear tires on the opposite side of the car to gain performance advantages...leading to the catastrophic tire failures seen at Silverstone. . Seems like the only way to insure safety (in both series) would be to enforce mandatory pre-race checks.

      Hm, tyres, progress! And it hasn't been even a full year since NASCAR phased out wooden spoke wheels. At that pace, by 2050 they'd discover that auto glass works better for windshields than fish bladder.

      You are correct as Timken Bearing also has issue with the crew chiefs going past their recommended settings on their spindle and bearing packages they supply. The mess them up and it is their own fault, Goodyear here is just looking to advance the tires and to cross the technology over to their street tires for marketing. I spent time with one of the Firestone Racing guys a while ago and he told me they looked at NASCAR and went into Indy because it was much easier to make the Indy Tires. He said they looked a the loads on the right front tires and how little room for error there was and they though it not to be the best type competition to reenter racing. On top of this NASCAR tells Goodyear how many laps they want a tire to last. If they wanted too Goodyear could supply tires that have great grip and last 500 miles at Daytona. They already have has several cars go the entire race on the same left front on only one change in the past. As for Tony and Kyle. Tony is a Hoosier guy and has a hate for Goodyear anyways and he is a racer too. Kyle is just a loud mouth that over drives his car to the point he may never win a championship until he learns how to finish. He is fun to watch drive but he needs to learn to finish all the laps. If this works they will have to learn how to work with the tires all over again as the wear will change on the tires. This is why tire engineer at Goodyear and on the teams lose a lot of sleep.

        Yessir...and they even SHIFT there Shiftright...unlike in many other top series. With respect to the top series: You want tech...go want some competition...tough to beat NASCAR. And all this coming from an F1 to CART guy in the mid-80s.
