Put on your space suits and diving bell helmets, for it's time to step into a time capsule. The 50th anniversary of a historic model, like, say, the Porsche 911 this year, is certain to bring flights of nostalgia. This historical trip with the 1965 Mustang, though - preliminary hype for next year's anniversary, we know - is a swell museum exhibit for anyone who enjoys bygone days of the automobile.

Lee Iaccoca gave a speech to motoring journalists on April 1, 1964 at the New York World's Fair to introduce a sporty car for younger drivers. His opening line: "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to one of the proudest moments of our lives." The company was so excited by what it had made that the Mustang was Ford's first "International Press Introduction," being introduced to some 2,000 journos around the world on the same day in the US and 11 European cities. Even through its difficult points, no one at the time could have known how well the Mustang would acquit that pride.

After the intro, the press drove Mustangs 750 miles from New York to Dearborn, MI, reading press kits that touted features like the "vertical, three-sectional taillights/turn signals," "170" six-cylinder engine with 101 horsepower and the available Cruise-O-Matic transmission.

Ford has put Iaccoca's "remarks" from the "Mustang National News Conference" and the original press kit online, so grab a fountain soda and enjoy.

      The "Mustang Fever" stories are legend. My favorites include the guy who slept in the showroom model so no one would buy it out from under him until his bank opened in the morning. Also the restaurant that put up a sign reading "Our hotcakes are selling like Mustangs." Congratulations to Ford for this now half-century old American success story.

      Times have changed. Back when this Mustang was being sold, Detroit made cars that were very cool. No more. Now, the Japanese and Germans make cars that are very cool and Detroit just copies what the Japanese and Germans are doing. Unfortunately, for Detroit, when they copy a Japanese car, they have not figured how to copy the Japanese car reliability.

          What are the American answers to the G63, R8, 918 spyder? Dude, if these were the great cars, then all the rich and famous people would be driving the vipers, and camaros. But, they're not. Because I live in a community filled with them. So, James still has you beat.

          What James & sfdjwk said does have some merit, although they did exaggerate quite a bit. The domestic automakers have literally handed German makes the upper hand when it comes to luxury vehicles. Cadillac is now a player in that segment, but not in the upper realm, while Lincoln &, to a lesser degree, Chrysler are still playing catch-up in many areas. Mainstream midsize & compact sedans have only recently begun being competitive with the Japanese makes, still with some blunders (i.e. Chevrolet Malibu, etc). I would not go as far as to say that "only" the Japanese & Germans build cars that are cool, but they do have an advantage in perceived "coolness" by a fairly large margin. I only purchase American brands, and will continue to do so, but I do have to admit that the perception of American brands is still tainted by a large portion of the buying public, particularly on the east & west coasts, hence James & sfdjwk's comments.

        I guess the fact that in the last JD Power dependability marks GM and Toyota basically were the tops. GM was better than Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsu, and Mazda, On the Initial Quality scores for this years models, GM was number 1. Buick has been at the top of the dependability rankings for so long I can't remember when they weren't. Other than the compact segment, the Japanese have and are still copying everything the Americans do, whether it's trucks, SUV's, large sedans, sport cars, you name it. Honda still can't make a decent automatic transmission. Their failure rate is stunning and they have no answer for the problem. Toyota has been leading the recall list for the last 5 years, wheres the quality in that. Time to get your head out of the sand James, this isn't the 80's anymore.

        What do the Japanese marques produce that can be even remotely called "cool" aside from maybe the FR-S/BRZ? The Supra is long gone, the S2000 is long gone, the RX-8 is gone, the NSX is long gone.

      50 mostly great years! The original cars still look great and lack nothing for styling or touches. I had a brand new 89 GT convertible for 125, 000 miles. and a used 2000 GT convertible for 50, 000 (more to come when I replace the crappy intake manifold) My 2000 black GT convertible gets compliments all the time. That 2015 had better be good!

        BS. I still have my rust-free '65 Mustang. Have not had to replace any sheet metal. It's those northern roads, not the car.

      I like the Mustang & if there was one thing I hope Ford changes its the solid rear axle. On a sports car like the Mustang its something in this car that needs to be changed.

      Times may have changed but the Mustang remarkably still remains true to its original concept: an affordable sporty but practical car that can be optioned to suit any personality. Hoping Ford does not change the formula too much for the next generation.
