The 2014 Soul is bigger and more refined, and Kia says its look has been inspired in part by the Track'ster concept. Interestingly, European buyers will get the option of a different look than what we'll see in our showrooms. They'll be able to specify the SUV Styling Pack seen here, which includes matte-black cladding on the front and rear fascias, along with what Kia refers to as piano-black trim on the wheel wells and side skirts. The roof is available painted black, white or red. With all of that black trim and slightly tougher look, the styling reminds us of the Fiat 500L Trekking, a model the Soul will compete directly against.

European markets also have the ability to spec their Souls like our North American version, which substitutes body-color trim for most of the black pieces. Currently, there are no plans to bring the SUV Styling Pack to the US. But that doesn't mean we'll never be able to buy this butch-look Soul on our side of the Atlantic. Company spokesperson James Hope confirms to Autoblog, "[Kia] has no plans to offer something similar to the EU-spec Soul at this time. However, we are always monitoring the market and if we saw an opportunity we would certainly look into it."

Feel free to peruse the press release below for more details on the Euro-spec Soul – which is slated to debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show – and then let Kia know if they should bring the SUV Styling Pack here by participating in our poll below.

European debut for new Kia Soul at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show

- Kia's funky urban crossover set for UK launch in Spring 2014
- Second-generation Soul to be based on latest Kia cee'd platform
- Improved emissions
- Increased interior and luggage space
- High levels of specification and customisation

The all-new 2014 Kia Soul urban crossover will make its European debut at the 65th Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt on 10 September, before going on sale across Europe early next year.

Inspired by the 2012 Kia Track'ster concept, the 2014 Soul introduces a thoroughly fresh, more grown-up appearance, whilst still instantly recognisable as a Soul.

The new vehicle - shown in European specification for the first time - echoes the outgoing model's upright stance, squared shoulders, wraparound greenhouse, high-mounted tail lights and confidence-inspiring SUV ride height. The new Soul also features an all-new interior, with higher quality materials and a more driver-focused design.

When the car goes on sale in 2014, buyers will also be able to choose between three different roof colours - black, white and red - as well as up to 11 exterior paint finishes.

The pair of new Kia Souls displayed on the Kia stand at IAA Frankfurt will also exhibit a new SUV Styling Pack, featuring piano black bumper trim, side skirts, wheel arches and a black painted roof. The new range of Soul accessory kits are designed to enable owners to fully enjoy and exploit the versatility of this unique compact SUV.

The biggest technical change for the 2014 Soul is the adoption of an all-new platform, based on that of the latest Kia cee'd. The result is greatly improved ride and handling compared with the outgoing model, as well as more mature and refined on-road behaviour. The second-generation Soul will also be the best in its class for refinement, a result of the car's upgraded suspension, 29 per cent stiffer bodyshell and comprehensive soundproofing. Interior noise levels are reduced by approximately three decibels.

Subtly larger dimensions also mean the new model offers buyers a more practical proposition, with a longer wheelbase and wider track contributing to greater cabin space and cargo capacity. Leg, head and shoulder room are increased for all passengers, while the cargo area is increased by 4 per cent to 354 litres (plus additional underfloor storage) with the rear seats upright.

Environmental performance for the new model is also improved. Buyers will be able to choose between the latest versions of Kia's 1.6-litre GDi petrol and CRDi diesel engines, as well as six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Both engines are carried over from the outgoing model, and feature improved efficiency with lower emissions.

Promising a more rewarding ownership experience, the 2014 Soul will be available in Europe with a range of new premium features (depending on model), including: front LED daytime running lights and rear LED 'halo' lights, xenon headlights, keyless entry and push-button engine start, automatic climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, panoramic glass sunroof and heated and electrically folding exterior mirrors.

The all-new 2014 Kia Soul will go on sale across Europe early next year when the full model line-up, choice of gasoline and diesel powertrains, performance, economy, equipment specifications and prices will be confirmed.

How that 'looks' like an SUV is beyond me.... Then again, some people think an inantimate object like a vehicle can somehow look 'agressive'.

Yes Kia, don't offer the ability to style the soul to look like an suv specifically in the market that is known for liking suvs most of all, while telling that market you'll only consider doing so if customers beg for it, oh I mean "if they see an opportunity" . Brilliant.

Not that I think the same argument applies to a little cladding on a car, but some liberals support banning guns because they look too much like "assault" weapons. That strikes me as pretty shallow. Just sayin' - and I say that as a liberal myself.

I don't always like this treatment, but the black rocker panels and wheel surrounds seem to visually diminish the mass of the slab sides and make it look smaller--and better--than it does otherwise. The black roof also makes it look less tall, but I don't know that's absolutely necessary. I know that some people find its normal proportions appealing, but I find this more attractive. If it were lifted, though, it would be too cliched.

I really think compact "SUVs" are the next big trend in cars. It would be dumb to not do this in the USA.

It would be smarter for Americans to get over the SUV infatuation, rather than buy non-SUVs that are styled to look like SUVs, lol!

I'd prefer that vehicles that look like SUVs perform like SUVs, and not be cars in SUV styled bodies which makes things confusing. And for the 99% of Americans that don't need an SUV, I wish they'd get over the SUV styling fetish and just get a wagon.

The CUV styling trend, to me, isn't a big deal, it's simply what people want and I don't think the solution is to tell them what they will have to get because others have decided they don't like it, especially when the decision ultimately hurts absolutely nobody. I wish they'd make wagons as well for people who like wagons, choice is always good and there are plenty of tastes in the world to cater to. I think you're in luck, personally. These "cars in SUV styled bodies" are turning more and more into wagons again and I think they're eventually going to get back to that point. It is getting confusing, yes. I personally can't tell what's a CUV and what's a car anymore. But that doesn't mean it's bad, and it's probably not going to last much longer. The primary thing I am annoyed by is the nearly universal knee-jerk reaction against SUVs in the United States by certain groups of people (and I am one of them, but not always in agreement with them, and this is one of the times that I find their opinion to be shallow and misinformed). The fact is that this is just a standard Kia Soul with some black plastic trim attached, and yet the concern with bringing it here seems to be that American audiences would think it "less fuel efficient" and it would cripple Kia's US marketing strategy. I think it's incredible that Kia Soul buyers would be turned off because Kia decided to add a single styling package that doesn't change the vehicle in any way except stylistically and which is optional.

Thanks for your opinion, Ducman. Why do you think it's bad for Americans to want vehicles that look like SUV's? Is that not better than people buying SUVs who don't need them at all? Isn't it better for someone who doesn't need an SUV to buy a 30 mpg CUV that has similar economy and ability to a car and is more like what they really need, than to buy a 20 mpg SUV they don't need, or to pay tens of thousands of dollars to buy a car they don't want?

I think they need to stop playing around and add an all wheel drive option to the Soul. It would make a great small utility vehicle. I also think that it would be cool with some more ground clearance and some 17inch wheels. Forget an appearance package. Give us the utility. By the way Scion should do the same for the xB. Just sayin!!
