The new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray might be hogging all the spotlight, but Chevy has another bit of excitement heading to dealers this fall: the new Z/28 Camaro. We first reported on the Z/28 at the 2013 New York International Auto Show in March, and while we still haven't gotten to take it for a spin, it's no surprise that it's already on our 2014 must-drive list.

Jay Leno, the lucky dog he is, managed to snag the Z/28 that was shown at New York for the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, making the funnyman the first person outside of General Motors to drive the reborn performance car.

Jay gives the Z/28 a fairly thorough going-over, and discusses the new Camaro with GM's performance guru, Al Oppenheiser. There's a wealth of technical details in here and plenty of sweet engine noise from the 7.0-liter V8 to listen to. Scroll down for the full look.

I'm convinced that the LS7 could make almost any car better.

The rear seat was changed to just solid foam and no forward folding (and associated hardware). That's about the most you can do to remove weight yet still keep it there.

"If I was in the market, first thing would be a set of rims and Hoosier's to get a good hook up off the line. Going to be some good numbers on the 1/4 with this." I believe you would be better off with the COPO Camaro.

I just saw a black 2014 convertible at a beach in Fort Pierce, FL last Friday. Liked the new front. Didn't like the rear.

Yes, it's heavy. Yes, you can't see out of it. Yes, the interior sucks. Nevertheless, this thing rocks, make no mistake. This will likely be cheaper than an M3/4, be way more exclusive, far more capable and faster on a track and the street, and just plain cool. It's not for everyone. I probably wouldn't buy one (we'll see, you never know). However, if I ever saw one on the street, I'd salute the crap out of it. 427 cubic inch engine. Carbon ceramic brakes. Manual transmission *only*. 305 sized Pirellis on all four corners. Optional stereo and AC. This thing is legit. Brock Sampson would probably drive it.

I thought the price was way too high for the Z/28's specs and equipment, but I didn't know that it came with Carbon ceramic brakes. Those are incredibly expensive, and worth around $5,000 to $10,000 alone. Also, while it doesn't make much sense, the LS7 is more expensive as a crate engine than the LSA.

If there was ever a car to make Ford **** their pants and make Mustang fanboys quickly clamber for some sort of YouTube evidence of a mustang beating a Camaro just to downplay how awesome this car is, this is it. Down vote me all you want, this is one badass car.

Leno is a Ford guy (as am I) and he makes it pretty obvious. I think Al is kind if an arrogant douche but he has put out some good products (1LE, ZL1, Z28). This car is pretty cool. Now I can't wait to see what Ford answers back with....factory built GT350 with a direct injection 5.4 Coyote making 520+HP anyone? Bye, bye Camaro (again)

Your just dealing in speculation with the GT350. I hope it's faster than the old over weight under powered Z2/8. It's going to have to be at least 6-7 secs faster than the Boss just to be equal to the ZL1 on a road course. And the Z2/8 is said to be 3 secs faster than the ZL1.I hope they find 9secs in the new GT. That should make it interesting.

Call me crazy, but my GT500 isn't the least bit scared to line up next to any car that's heavier and has 160hp less. Now, back under your bridge.

So what your saying is your car with 160 more horsepower and less weight is faster than the camaro? Isn't that a given? What's the point your trying to make? I don't think anyone has said that the Z/28 was going to beat it in a drag race. It's not built to go the 1/4 mile it's meant to be a track car. Once you get that to sink into your head,we'll be on the same page.

"So what your saying is your car with 160 more horsepower and less weight is faster than the camaro? Isn't that a given?" I was replying to a troll that referred to a head to head competition and a starting line. Perhaps you should be replying to him, since we're both on the same page. "It's not built to go the 1/4 mile it's meant to be a track car." Then what's the 1LE and the ZL1? Didn't the GM guy said they wanted a car that could "do it all" right in the video? If you don't think people will be drag racing these, you're dreaming. Boss 302's have been drag racing since they were introduced, even though they're "track cars". Anyhow, anyone that spent this much money on a track car Camaro, when they could just buy a Corvette should have their head examined.

I never said they wouldn't be drag racing them. I'm just pointing out the fact that beating a car that weighs more and has less HP means very little in the real world. Now if you beat a car that' has over 100 HP more and weighs 100s of ponds less than that's something to brag about. That's all I'm trying to say. Not trying to start a typing fight.

What do you guys expect. GM to do a complete refresh on a car that's in it's last year. This car is sending the middle finger to every manufacture out there. It's basically saying,"Bring it on,lets see what you got".I'd be very afraid of Chevy in the coming years. They are getting serious about performance and the best is yet to come!
        LOLO

yep there parts are leapfrogging each other. they will be ready when aluminum frames roll out. If this is what they can do with what they have i would be too. I am no longer concerned about strip times and SUPER BLOCKS! i want to know about the car and when i say that i mean the WHOLE thing. not just the engine. They seem to be focused on that.
