Honda is returning to Formula One in 2015 with McLaren, and when that engine maker and that F1 constructor are mentioned together, two other words are never far behind: Ayrton Senna. There are engine suppliers, constructors and drivers that have bigger numbers, but those three form a triumvirate that came close to defining F1 in the eighties.

Honda Japan has produced a commercial called Sound of Honda that celebrates Senna at a race that turned out to be one of the most momentous of his career for good and bad reasons: the 1989 grand prix at Suzuka where he won, then was stripped of, the driver's championship.

The commercial has a terrifically simple premise - there's no CG, no old footage of Senna, no one says a word, it's just sound. And it's pretty damn good. Check it out below.

I still remember that day in 1994... It's very dusty in here - I think I need a moment alone now. :-(

This is a great AD, but reality is reality, by 1993, there was a new kid on the block that had a better tech and that was renault, you still remember 1994? honda (senna still the driver) with drew from F1 1993 after been beat by williams using the sound of the new renault engine, renault engine won the same 6 world and construction tiitle from 1993 to 1999 and withdrew, never being beating. Honda engine won the title from 1986 to 1992.

My favorite F1 driver of all time. Kudos to Honda for a superb commercial. Not only does it honor the Legend, but man, it hit me right in the feelings!

Wow! Simple. Clean. Powerful. Beautiful. Know what I like second best? The fact they didn't play some lame butt-rock or shatty techno during the only sound that matters. Seriously, why must that happen in car vids? MT showing the new Vette squealing around the figure-eight or accelerating down a straight...and they're playing some lame-ass, generic "background music." Knock it off already! We want to hear the car! Watch this Honda vid and maybe learn something.

Errrr emm... I just got tears in my eyes in the middle of an airport. Damn... Way to go Honda. I have a new TL 6 speed. Maybe I'll flog the hell out of it tonight and see if any of that spirit is in there.

You'll need an original NSX for that one bro. The TL makes senna roll in his grave.

i remember back then when motorsport was a huge boom in japan. just like americans like baseball and europeans like soccer, everyone loved motorsport. and now, interest in motorsport is like the worst way to attract japanese women. what a pity.

If you want more on Senna the thing to see is the documentary called " Senna " probably the best F1 movie I've ever seen ! With the movie "Rush" by Ron Howard coming in the fall the documentary Senna is like the real story behind the competition of F1 ! The eighties were still in the time of where Safety took a back seat to speed. Rush looks like a real thrill to see on the Big screen, can't wait.

The Senna documentary is incredible, a must watch for anyone who likes motorsports. I love how the entire thing was just old footage and old interviews.
