A new report from Mustangs Daily, citing insider sources at Ford, tells us that the Blue Oval will produce 1,000 next-generation Mustangs with the model year designation of 2014 ½, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the storied marque. The commemorative half-year designation is a rumor that's been swirling in Mustang forums for quite some time now, and seems more plausible than ever with this most recent report. Certainly it's not far-fetched to believe that Ford will want to make a big deal of the golden anniversary for its most-loved model.

The story (compiled by Drew Phillips, who runs the aforementioned Mustang site when he's not directing the photography on these pages) goes on to say that the limited-run cars will be the first built on the new Mustang platform internally known as S550 (and spied testing in the attached gallery). Each car is said to carry a "special" VIN and build number, though no performance upgrades versus the 2015 cars to follow are in the works. A collector's dream then, rather than a weekend racer's.

      It would be more surprising if there was no 2014 1/2 Mustang. I suspect a lot of Mustang buyers would even pay extra to get a '14.5 model instead of a '15.

      If I'm not mistaken, didn't Ford make an official announcement years ago that there was never a 1964.5 Mustang? A good friend of mine is a Mustang fanatic, owns 4, and he said where 1964.5 came from was that the first run had generators (along with GEN dashboard nomencalture) then Ford switched over to alternators (ALT) after a months of production. And that is where the ’64.5 myth came from amongst Mustang enthusiast.

          I would say that a modern interpretation of a classic design is both different and even a little daring. How many cars do you see driving around that look anything like the current Mustang? Ford may have made it look easy with the 2005 Mustang, but people seem to forget that there are some retro themed designs that didn't do so well. Do you remember the last generation Ford Thunderbird, the Chevy SSR, and the Plymouth Prowler? Even the Monte Carlo tried to recapture some of its former glory by incorporating a few retro cues into its design, but the overall proportions of it were a little awkward, to say the least, and it was eventually discontinued again.

        You can tell all that by looking at this picture? Man, I'd love to have your eye sight. BTW, the Camaro is the same as the current Mustang, modern interpretation of a classic design. Regarding the next Mustang, one thing is a safe bet, and that is that it will retain its long hood, short rear deck profile that it's always had. If that's too "retro" for you then buy a Civic Si or something.

          Okay Aron N., The Mustang started the "retro muscle/pony car" craze. When the New Beetle and PT Cruiser came out, there wasn't a whole lot of interest in midsize, RWD, V8 powered coupes. By the late 90s and early 2000s, much of that market had shifted toward SUVs, 2+2 sports cars, and sport compacts. The 05' Mustang is what really renewed interest in pony cars.

      I'm thinking that if Ford wants to do a '14 1/2 model, it should be kept under wraps until the vehicles are at the dealer and then they should all be released on the same day. So the first 1000 buyers will really be the first to see and drive the new Mustang, not some automotive writer that will nit pick the vehicle before it even reaches a customer. For something like that I'd actually pony (pun intended) up the cash!

        Actually, the first 1000 buyers should pick up their new Mustang in Detroit at the factory. That would ensure no one gets a glimpse of the new Mustang before the first 1000 buyers. Throw in a tour of the factory for good measure. Fly in, drive home a future classic. I think the Mustang faithful would go for it.

        If you mean current generation body mules, well no you won't see any. As the facelift debuted this year, internally at GM design selection is occurring. Until that design as frozen by the end of this year or early next year, you not see test mules nor prototypes of the Camaro. Face-lifts occur as hold-overs, in being parallel to the underground, but active final design work of the successor. The S550 Mustang final design by Kemal Curic was chosen circa September 2012 and frozen for production in December 2012. Six months later, prototypes were spotted testing in the photo above on June 10, 2013. You'll see similar for the next Camaro, give or take +/- 3-6 months.
