Having already driven the new Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, we're just itching to get our hands on its hatchback counterpart, the A45 AMG. Not only has Auto Express driven both cars, it recently pitted them against each other in a head-to-head sibling rivalry throwdown.

On both the open track and the open road, AE gets a feel for both performance compacts including the pair's pièce de résistance, the incredibly compact and powerful 2.0-liter, 355-horsepower turbo four-cylinder engine. We don't want to ruin any of the fun for you, so scroll down to find out what AE has to say about these new AMG cars.

That is because he is European....they don't eat as much fast food as we Americans and they can actually fit in smaller cars instead needing a Pickup or SUV with 10 cup holders.....LOL

Horrible looking. It's like Mercedes took all the excessive body sculpting from Hyundai AND Mazda and threw it at the canvas.

Funny how brands like Buick and Lincoln are repeatedly trashed for being all FWD or AWD and not RWD. But when Mercedes comes out with a new FWD model the auto press wets itself with excitement over the car.

Its because the Germans always get a free-pass by the automotive press. Not only are they are not called-out for going with a FWD layout, but the absurd prices for these two vehicles were mentioned as if they were nothing. The guy mentioned that they cost about 40,000 and I presume that its in GBP. If so, that converts to a ridiculous $60000 USD. While I would be the first to admit that you can't directly convert car prices from one market to another, that is still an absurd amount of money.

That's because having one FWD in your lineup is not a bad thing. Have ALL FWD vehicles in your lineup is a bad thing.

That's because nothing Buick or Lincoln makes can go around a track as fast as this nor do they excite the driver in anything close to the same way. BTW, these cars are AWD, sending 50% of their power to the rear when necessary.

only the AMG versions are AWD. the standard cars are Front Drive. And good news everybody There will be an AWD option on some Buicks next year.

I don't know about you but I'd expect an AWD system on an AMG product to be an actual performance system not something that behaves like its on a CUV but again, that's just me. Being this is an AMG product wouldn't you expect a 50/50 or 40/60 split. Hell, even 60/40 is better than the 90/10 of this car.

I see a lot positive press for the Regal & Regal GT (and I wouldn't mind taking one for a spin). Lincoln on the other hand deserves all the mockery it receives.

Are you comparing Buick/Lincoln against an entry-level Mercedes?

Personally, I feel that companies do not need to rely on being RWD to succeed. My favorite is how people are quick to forget Audi who have always had FWD when claiming "European luxury cars are so much better because they're all RWD". True, they're better known for their AWD models, but they still sell plenty of FWD cars.

Hideous. Both of them. OK fine, I'm being a little negative here. They do have nice looking seats and I'm impressed by the engine specs, but the exterior styling gets blown away by even Hyundai's latest offerings.

This drivetrain layout drives the front wheels all the time, they cannot be decoupled. That means when you drive out of a corner the front wheels will overload first due to both steering and accelerating (as well as the weight shift rearward) and you will understeer coming hard out of corners. What a joke. I hoped this was the natural successor to the 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, but instead it's just a pretender. Please Mercedes, drop this engine in a better car.

They definitely are going a different route than in the past, especially AMG. I think a C32 for less than $10K. Or pony up for a V8 C55. But I just can't get over mo manual transmission. I considered the CLA and rejoining MBCA for for track events after owning a C32 for the starting price. But tuned my Verano Turbo to similar horsepower and about 50 ft-lbs more of torque.

Aren't those two basically the same car? It's like comparing a 3 door version of the 1 series against the 5 door one, but wait, there's a twist, those two are actually rear wheel drive.

Yuck. if I had that car I'd put the engine and trans in the trunk and force it to drive backwards.

I'd take one in a second. AWD and that great 0-60 time with a realistic price tag would make a sale from this guy. Make mine black please.

I really wish I could spring for the CLA45 AMG when it comes out but that's probably going to be a little bit out of my price range. But hopefully the base CLA will make for a good DD.
