It's happened. General Motors' biggest vehicle market – at least in terms of new model sales – is China. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, GM and its various Chinese joint venture operations enjoyed a 10.6-percent sales increase in the first half of 2013, selling almost 1.6 million units in the market. That puts GM China about 200,000 units ahead of its US sales totals over the same period – this, despite indicators that the communist nation's economy is losing momentum.

TDB notes that like GM, rival Ford has also enjoyed a robust 2013 in China thus far, with its sales up a whopping 47 percent to 407,721 units sold – 75,254 of them in June alone. Between the two US automakers, passenger car sales for the first half of 2013 are up around 14 percent, well ahead of the rest of the industry's 10-percent growth estimates for the market. Some of the sales growth may come as a result of an overall anti-Japan sentiment in China, though the American brands have long outsold their Japanese counterparts in the country.

By The General's own predictions, China will only continue to grow in sales importance. The company has designs on selling over five million cars a year in the market before the end of the decade, a total that figures to dramatically widen the gap versus its US totals – even if America's auto market makes a full recovery to the salad days of over 17-million units a year.

      This has pretty much been the situation with the Japanese car companies for decades now, right? Many (if not most of them), have been selling more cars in the US than they sold in their own home country. For the most part, that has greatly benefited those companies by allowing them to expand way beyond what their home-country could ever naturally support in terms of sales volume. GM and the rest of the Detroit carmakers have historically been very US-centric in their management and future product development. Sure they have had foreign divisions (like Ford of Europe, and Holden/Opel for GM) for quite some time , but the core company has been very concentrated toward American sales. With more and more sales coming from China, I see a major shift where product planners can not just look at the US market and hope that those models will sell elsewhere. They have to be designed with an international perspective to begin with. That will be a good thing. The US has had artificially low gas prices for decades that has allowed US carmakers to put efficiency near the bottom of their to-do list. Detroit, for the most part, didn't care that the rest of the world was (and still is) paying 2X or more on each gallon of gas. They could overlook that issue simply by concentrating on the USDM. However with a shift toward international sales will pretty much force Detroit to become more competitive in areas where Americans have historically not cared too much about. Fuel efficiency has to go up to sell to countries like China. Ever expanding size of cars also has to stop because most other nations do not have roads as large as ours. I see more hatchbacks coming out of GM in the future because most places outside the US see them as being way more space-efficient than the typical sedan. These are all good chances that are needed and could make GM cars sold in the US more competitive as well.

        Actually, probably not. Many U.S. multinational corporations will not bring overseas profits back to the U.S. due to the 35% tax rate that would be incurred. For example, Apple is sitting on over $100B in cash overseas, but won't bring it back until taxes are lowered.       They may be selling more units in China, but let's not get hysterical. 40% of their volume are Wuling microvans which are slightly more refined than golf carts and sell for less than half the price of a Chevy Spark. Speaking of Chevy, their best seller is the Sail which is ~2/3rds the price of the Spark. The best selling Buick is the Excelle which is cheaper than a Chevy Cruze. They may be moving volume, but most of it is at price points below the bottom of the US market. North American revenue is still 3.4X as much as "International Operations" which includes China and India.

        I have spent the past 3 years in China. I don't know about the microvan thing... they are buying up Buicks, VW's, BMW's, Audi's, Chevy's, Mercedes, Nissans, Hondas, Volvos, Lexi, Toyotas, Bentleys, Volvos, and more like you wouldn't believe now. Sure, the models are less expensive in China, but they are also less expensive versions to make. The other thing to consider is that they also have the largest growing luxury market in the world. I was in a small backwater town in the west where the POS hotel had a Bentley, two BMW L's, and then a new Aventador pulled in. In Chengdu, the Ferrari dealer is constantly sold-out. I have seen more Porche Panamera's here than ever in my life. And those more luxury brand models don't come in cheapo versions other then maybe more 2.0T engines. Due to the huge income gap, China has a luxury market that just kills America's. Sure, its less than 1%, but that 1% could buy a new Ferrari every year (and they do).
