A Toyota executive has said that the automaker's hybrid Prius model may not reach its 2013 goal of selling 250,000 units in the US marketplace. Bill Fay, group vice president for Toyota's US sales, told Reuters, "The 240,000 to 250,000 range is kind of where we're settling our sights for the Prius family."

The first-generation Prius, a five-passenger model, was introduced to the States in 2001 (its arrival made it the second mass-produced hybrid, after the two-seat Honda Insight). The second-generation model arrived in 2004, followed by the current third-generation design that arrived for the 2010 model year. The automaker has subsequently added the Prius V, a hatchback wagon (shown above) and the Prius C, a subcompact hatchback. As of March, 2013, cumulative worldwide sales of the Prius had reached 3.67 million units.

Last year, Toyota sold 236,659 Prius models in the US. However, sales of the model have fallen 5.1 percent in the first six months of 2013. In response, the automaker has boosted its marketing for the model, and the promotions are expected to continue through at least July.

      For years the Prius was really the only game in town if you wanted a super efficient car. Finally they have some real competition from Ford, GM, Nissan and Tesla.

      This is the result of more competition in the market (esp. Ford's Energi line-up) and also plug-ins. The Prius is no longer the top green car given plug-ins.

      Gas prices, while still high, are not as high as they could be. Hybrid sales would accelerate if gas prices went up.

      The competition is fierce now that mostly all OEMs are in on the hybrid game. The other remarkable thing is how competitive the compact and subcompact market has now become since GM and Ford decided to step up their game. I mean the Sonic, Spark, Cruze, Focus and Fiesta are all viable alternatives to the Prius as well and are lighting up the sales charts. They are eating up Prius sales and Volt and Cmax sales as well....

        You do realize the Prius liftback is a midsize car? It sucks sales from the "compact and subcompact market" because you get a fairly reliable midsize car with *better* mpg than any smaller car. Perhaps you mean those cars are competitors to the Prius C. They get worse mpg but the Fiesta in particular is nicer.

      Are we seeing early market saturation? Could people that were hesitant to buy a Prius in the first place be thinking that its time for more alternatives to enter the fray? Maybe its the relatively stable current gas prices that have been traditionally been causing knee jerk reactions for the desire to have a car with innovation, but get great gas mileage such as through a hybrid? Likely, its a mix of all of these things. I can't honestly say I'm all that surprised, but I doubt this situation with Toyota having less sales is permanent. Something is going to eventually happen that will cause another uptick in the desire to save money in the hybrid/electric car development that is starting to build steam. Competition is always a good thing for the consumer. Which leads to more adoptions of the concept of using electric power to drive our lives in the not too distant future.

          No, the Prius is simply not refined enough or technologically advanced enough to compete with the more advanced vehicles that have been, and are continuing to be introduced into the marketplace. Toyota has sat on their laurels and is now experiencing the ramifications of this strategy - they have been losing market share on ALL of their segment leaders, let alone their segment laggers!!! Even their management has acknowledged that they are going to continue to lose market share in the US!! But that is just the beginning - they were too complacent and thought that they had no real competition in their segment leading vehicles, but are now far behind and falling even further behind rapidly!! Their sales are falling, but will fall much faster once those who have been blindly buying Toyota after Toyota see that their neighbors have moved on and are in fact, enjoying far, far superior vehicles, let alone the fact that Toyota's age demographics continues to trend upwards - as the upper range of Toyota buyers moves past their buying years, Toyota's outdated and technologically inferior vehicles will rapidly lose their appeal to knowledgeable buyers! Sorry to burst your bubble, but Toyota is a has been company, rapidly moving towards non-relevance in the modern world!

          Uh, what? The Prius has been ahead of the pack for the last 2 generations of the car. Still a better hybrid than what everyone else is offering. The yearly sales numbers are 10-20x higher than all other hybrid models. It's all their other cars that aren't much to get excited about.

      hold on a second... is being smug and holding up traffic no longer cool. Or the realization that their so called "green"car isn't really that green (because of the nickel in the batteries.) Or could it be that other hybrid cars look so much better and don't scream im a smug environmentalist. Or is it that other hybrids are fun to drive, something Toyota knows nothing at all about. Or could it be a combination of all of them.

        Holy ****, are you actually this stupid? NiM-H batteries haven't been used in cars in a long time. The Prius' batteries contain no nickel whatsoever. They are Lithium-ion batteries, and are much, much cleaner and environmentally friendly. Stop getting all of your automotive knowledge from Top Gear. You'd be surprised how much less stupid you'll sound.

          Only the Prius plug-in has Li-ion. The regular prius still uses NimH. They say it is more reliable at the moment but they may upgrade to lithium in the next generation.

        Diesel and biodiesel will be around for a long time. They get excellent MPG, some even better than the hybrids of today. They are running cleaner than they have in the past. I am glad we are seeing diesel more options in the US.

Plus if any part in your car uses stainless steel or chrome you are using nickel. There's also plenty of alloys that use nickel (esp. as part of the engine block). Now for the battery disposal myth. Do people seriously think they just throw the battery in the landfill? The nimh pack that the Prius use actually has very good recycling value (the scrap value of the pack is much higher than the costs to recycle), so you actually get paid to recycle it ($200 per pack). Toyota has a facility in California to do just that.           @Jesse Gurr You try throwing a hundred pound battery in the trash. It isn't that easy. Car batteries (the lead acid ones) have the best recycling rate of all consumer products (98-99%)! It's because you get money back for recycling it. The Prius battery will be similar.

Where electricity generation comes from is irrelevant to the Prius liftback, Prius C, and Prius V because they're entirely powered by gasoline, just a lot less of it than other cars. @LankySean, "Also, it's a well known fact that hybrids are much harsher on the environment to produce than a standard car." That depends on your definition of "much". The environmental impact of making a car is roughly proportional to its weight. Everything else is hand-waving. Toyota's own research in 2009 concluded Prius manufacturing is more polluting than its other cars (Toyota has since worked to reduce it), but the pollution from manufacturing is about 20% of total lifetime pollution, and it's *dwarfed* by the pollution avoided by burning less gasoline in a more fuel-efficient car.

      250,000 units a year in the USA is a success story. For reference, Honda sells about 200,000-300,000 Civics a year to the USA. Toyota sells about 300,000-450,000 Camry's a year.

      They are boring. Toyota needs to update the cars every six months not every three years. Technology is moving faster and faster. Phones, computers, tablets are constantly getting updated. This goes for volts and leafs too!
