Today, hotrodding has a pretty staid definition. Take one classic American car, add one classic American V8, sprinkle with tire smoke and you pretty much have every hot rod to roll out of a shop in the last 40 years. Mike Borroughs knows it wasn't always this way. Once upon a time, getting your bucket to go faster meant grabbing whatever parts were lazing about the yard, bolting them together with a bit of ingenuity and laughing your way down the quarter mile. It's in that spirit that Burroughs built his 1928 Ford Model A.

Rather than turn to the tired flathead or the common Chevrolet small block, Burroughs plucked a 4.0-liter V8 from a 1995 BMW 7 Series. With 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, the engine has no trouble shuffling the old A around town. He had to build a custom chassis to get everything to cooperate, but the result is a 1,500-pound heathen that looks built to harass dry lake beds. You can check it out in the video below. Be warned, the soundtrack by Hanni el Khatib may not be safe for work – awesomeness of this caliber rarely is.

      Horrid music, and I'll pass on the car. Sorry, I have to disagree when he mentions in the article that it's "traditional"....um, no. It's closer to a BMW powered rat rod than anything traditional.

        This one would handle like garbage because of the MASSIVE DOHC engine in it. One would think that a manufacturer of sports sedans(BMW) would make an engine more compact WITHOUT the SKY HIGH center of gravity of that underpowered beast... still cool tho...

          Yeah, no... since the slumlords decided to have the chassis in the weeds it left only one option, i.e. engine above ground level. Since you haven't experienced anything post-iron block, and modern engines are made from aluminum or alumsil... guess what, the "center of gravity" for the ENGINE goes up, XO cheers ;)

      Wow guys. As much as I do enjoy your blog, I'm not sure I've ever considered it high quality journalism. Thankfully the huge number of typos has been reduced, but where exactly do those first two lines get you? Making the following statement doesn't exactly do much for your reputation: "Today, hotrodding has a pretty staid definition. Take one classic American car, add one classic American V8, sprinkle with tire smoke and you pretty much have every hot rod to roll out of a shop in the last 40 years." I dare say hotrodders deserve a bit more respect than that, and the number of styles hotrodding has gone through in the last 40 years is pretty interesting on its own. Perhaps we should make some statement about cars to the degree of, "Today cars have a pretty staid definition. Take four wheels and an engine and you pretty much have every car of the last 100 years." Hotrodders go out and craft a unique whole from a variety of parts to meet their own particular vision - a vision far more varied and interesting than simply a "classic American car" and a "classic American V8." Guys who buy Porsches and Ferraris simply spend a ton of money to get their vehicle of choice. Highly impressive and desirable pieces of machinery to be sure, but the owner wont exactly have a story to tell about every individual part on the thing. Seriously, leave the pointless rhetoric at home. It's not getting you anywhere.

        Take every hot rod you can think of built in the last five years. Now delete every one with an LS swap, not even a V-8 swap but that specific engine. If you're anything like me that kills a LOT of cars. His point is valid, if hyperbolic.

      Honestly, my biggest gripe with it isn't the motor (BMW motor swaps, while uncommon, isn't unheard of. My favorite are the BMW V12 swaps some rods out there are rocking). I'm just not a fan of the overall shape of it. Something about how narrow/blocky it seems or maybe how far up the rear axle is compared to the truck bed, I can't quite put my finger on it. I do like the nice Bavarian touches like the 2002 taillights and the BBS RS's though.

        Just because you can look on Wikipedia for engine codes, doesn't make you sound smart chief. A counterpart of the Euro-segment was commonly available here. If you EVER have a problem with cylinder bores/sleeves due to fuel... you have a very large problem in the first place.

          And just because you call a guy "chief" in a condescending manner, it doesn't make you the king of the comment section, buddy. An engine code is a hell of a lot more specific than saying "you know, that one engine from that auto company that was in that car that they made in the 90's". You've never referenced a source for information before, Rich?
