Minddrive Student Group Uses Social Media To Power Electrified Karmann Ghia From Kansas City To Washington, D.C.
Minddrive is a non-profit after school program that transforms at-risk Kansas City youth into green automotive designers, engineers and marketers. We featured their Project Lola EV on TRANSLOGIC 78 and now Minddrive has launched a new, innovative campaign to promote their mission called the Social Fuel Tour. The group plans to drive an electrified Volkswagen Karmann Ghia from Kansas City to Washnigton, D.C. powered by "social fuel."
The car uses a unique dash-mounted device to "convert" social media activity into wattage for the vehicle. As one Minddrive student put it, "we reconfigured the battery to where it gets juice by tweets, Facebook likes, Instagram."
In other words, the vehicle will use battery power to make the trip, but social media input will dictate how much the vehicle can draw on its batteries. The goal is to raise awareness for Minddrive and electric mobility by getting people talking and sharing online.
The Social Fuel tour kicked off last week and runs through June 9. For more info, check out Minddrive's appearance on HuffPost Live below.
