As a part of a goal to increase its US sales tally up to 500,000 annual units by the end of the decade, Subaru is investing $400 million in its Lafayette, IN assembly plant in order to start building the Impreza in 2016. According to Automotive News, about half of that investment will be for a new paint plant while another big chunk will be used to extend the assembly line to allow for the increased capacity.

Currently, Subaru's Lafayette plant is responsible for building about 200,000 Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models each year (not including around 100,000 Toyota Camry sedans), but Subaru-specific output will be increased to 300,000 units, requiring an additional 900 new hires as well. Although a previous report suggested the Forester and Impreza would be moving Stateside, this AN article only mentions the hatchback and sedan versions of the Impreza being added to Lafayette – and no mention of the closely related XV Crosstrek.

Totally wrong - Look at the links below to get knowledgeable on this subject: http://media.ford.com/googleSearch.cfm?cx=007812692274835949346%3A5msz5e-s47a&cof=FORID%3A11&ie=UTF-8&q=North+America+facilities+investments&searchBtn.x=40&searchBtn.y=10 http://www.freep.com/article/20130228/BUSINESS0103/130228037/Chrysler-plants-Kokomo-central-Indiana-1-250-jobs-374-million http://media.gm.com/content/media/us/en/gm/news.filter.html/GM/EN/News/facilities.html In Indiana alone, where this plant is, Chrysler has invested huge sums of money and added many jobs at the Kokomo transmission plant. And GM has invested huge sums of money to re-tool the Fort Wayne pickup truck plant - just two examples. There are many others locations in the US that Ford, GM and Chrysler are investing huge sums of money into. Ford - Flat Rock, Michigan retooling for Fusion production, GM - Lansing, Michigan tooling for nextgen Camaro, Chrysler - Toledo tooling for nextgen Jeep. Not to mention that all three of these companies do the vast majority of their global engineering development in the US!

LOL, you list Chrysler as "Domestic". Chrysler is just one of many brands owned by FIAT.

You need to do a little research before shooting off with garbage that is not based on ANY facts. Ford is starting up Fusion production in Flat Rock Michigan this fall. GM is starting up Chevy Impala production in Detroit Michigan too. NW, Honda, and Toyota are investing in Mexico starting up more production there.

With all the start-ups going under here in Indiana, it's great Subaru is investing more. Solid cars, too. Although I would like a decent 3-row option to replace my Outback...

I don't think Toyota is going to let Subaru die.

Tribeca is what, about as old as the Volvo XC90 platform? I haven't read anything about a replacement anytime soon either. There *was* the exiga a few years back...so who knows, maybe Subaru will bring an update to that stateside at some point. The thought of something mazda5 with AWD does sound interesting, as it should to the usual AB'er who loves anything wagony with AWD (and maybe manual or diesel to dream about).

We gave the Mazda5 a long look- like the exterior size, fuel econ potential, etc. Turns out fuel economy is only a little better than the Odysse we ended up with, And carrying anything with the 3rd row up is just out of the question.

Show the new Outback. Hope it has a softer interior material, a 6speed auto (no CVT) and a stronger 3.6l. Do that i am all in.

Man, the current Impreza looks so.... boring. Seriously. It used to be such an eye-catching car... Shame.

I jumped on a 2012 as soon as I could and I love that car! But I doubt they'd do a new model in 2016. Their current cycle would put out a new Impreza in 2017. 2016 is when the tribeca's replacement will be released. Rumor within subaru points towards a minivan or something bigger like the Toyota Sequoia. Either way I will be first in line for a decent 7 seater from Subaru!

That car, especially with that color, looks like something the kind but quiet elderly lady in your neighborhood drives. Even the Jetta looks better.

So, an all new Impreza is pretty much confirmed for 2016 then? :)
