According to Green Car Reports, a few minor changes are on deck for the littlest Chevrolet. Christi Landy, Chevy's small car marketing director, confirmed to GCR that the 2014 model year Spark will lose its four-speed automatic transmission in favor of a continuously variable unit.

The new CVT will be offered alongside the Spark's five-speed manual transmission, and no other changes are planned regarding the car's 84-horsepower, 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Fuel economy numbers have not been released as of this writing, but a slight gain is expected for the new CVT model.

This isn't a huge deal to the naked eye, but we fully expect that the new CVT-equipped Spark will offer a more refined driving experience. The 2014 Spark hits Chevy dealers later this year.

Any MPG gain for an auto-equipped Chevy Spark is a good gain. Larger GM Products get better gas mileage than the auto equipped Chevy Spark.

If one really needs to save every penny on gas, they should drive small manual cars.

I was under the impression that modern automatics outperform manual trans when it comes to fuel economy...

I have a cousin who is "kind-of-a-big-deal" in the auto world. A decade or so ago he was laughing at CVTs saying they don't last but about 100,000 miles or less. I wonder if that is/was true and if they have gotten any better if they weren't. Me? I'm a manual transmission man.

I have a 2003 Civic Hybrid with 200,000 miles and the original CVT. The only service I've had done to it was to flush the transmission fluid every 100,000 miles.

I just wish foxtrot685 got some facts before he wrote, nissan have been use the CVT from 2003, and did not have an issue until 2007, some manufacture fault cause it, the issue was solve in the same year, the data can be found on edmunds. Nissan transmission is no duds as, alot of manufacture use nissan CVT transmissions, and no problem. Most Auto manufacture and journalist will tell you nissan have the best CVTs. http://www.edmunds.com/nissan/murano/2007/reliability.html?style=&sub You can see form the data provided the CVT issue happen only 2007--2008, and it was V6 engines only.

It's Pepto Bismol pink. People who buy Chevrolets consume that stuff by the gallon on a daily basis.

People - you need to chill!! The Spark is the best seller in the US in this admittedly small segment - it is kicking several other more established models butts in the marketplace! Look at the Scion I(diot) Q(uotient), and Smart (really should be asinine choice) ForTwo - the Spark just got in the market and it is wiping the floor with them! Not every car is targeted at enthusiasts - this is targeted at those who live in congested cities with hard to find parking, difficult traffic to maneuver in and who want a reliable, fuel efficient car with a warranty that can fit four people - neither the IQ or Smart can do that!! Face it, this is pretty well done for the segment - do I like the styling? NO, would I drive one? NO. But apparently there are a lot of people who find this 'just right' for their needs and are putting their money where their mouths are!! And to those who are anguishing over the pink color - news flash!! Are you female and young? If not, then you are not the target for the pink cars! Sheesh, peeps, lighten up!

That is such a lame and pathetic comment that you should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking it was worth the effort to post - the Spark is built in Korea you mental midget!!

Why bother defending it? GM's not gonna pay for it.

Also this is not in the Same class as a SMART and even if it was, is this a contest for who has the best smelling turd? The Smart is 106 inches long. This is 145 inches long. The Yaris is 154 inches long. Clearly it is a lot closer in size to a Yaris, which would wipe the floor with it.

After all the great cars I have seen people trash on this forum, I am shocked that people are coming out to defend this Made in Korea Turd. This is one the more dismal cars on the road. It is the very essence of the tiny penalty box car.

@ PeterScott Peter, it's not very honest to trash other manufacturers models, without declaring your own conflict of interest.

Most cars in this class don\'t have spares.. Most Hyundais and Kias don\'t have them either, even some of the fairly uplevel cars.

But, but, the cheapest car sold in America offers a spare as standard equipment, shouldn't they all? That is rather pathetic I think.
