Audi released a single photo of the long-tailed version of its R18 E-Tron Quattro Le Mans racer, but the photo didn't offer the best view of the stretched rear. The car has been caught testing at Monza, in Italy, and not only do we get a better view of what it's got out back, we get pretty awesome sound as it makes high-speed runs past the camera.

Since the 2013-spec car was found to be down on performance versus the 2012, the long-tail is a different evolution to see if Audi can eke out more performance from its already dominant chassis. Have a look and a listen in the video below.

its a shame Le Mans racers dont get as much attention here as F1, i honestly consider it a much more interesting and competative form of racing.

Exactly! And even worse, now the ALMS is wimping out and discontinuing the LMP1 class. What a shame.

Wow those are some crazy new sounds, it really does sound like a fighter jet flying towards you, then like a car when its going away... interesting.

I saw this video last week, looks and sounds fantastic. I hope this setup works out for Le Mans. Apparently the 2013 car was making extra downforce thus slowing it up vs the 2012 at Sebring. I can\'t wait until 2014 when Porsche returns to the LMP1 class. We need more than just a 2 way fight, although I am happy Toyota is participating since Peugeot called it quits.

There is no metaphor that can accurately describe how fast that thing looks.

Especially cornering. I expect open wheel cars to carry that much speed through a corner, but for a full-bodied sportscar it looks unnatural.

In the group C era when there were less restrictions on aero, the sports cars were faster at most tracks than the F1 cars. Many shared the same engines and the F1 cars were a lot lighter, but the sports cars had less drag and more downforce.

I admire your enthusiasm (and your disdain for NASCAR) but you're just factually wrong. An Audi will peak 3.0G at the corner called 'Indianapolis'. F1 cars will peak at 4.5G. I still think sportscars are so much more fun to watch (and relevant!) than F1.

Excuse me........ but these cars are faster than open wheeled race cars... and they corner better! Try tuning in to Lemans this July. That\'s real racing.... racing, not the \'ring around the rosey\' or \'follow the leader\' racing of Nascar! This past February\'s Daytona 500 was the most boring race in history!!!!

It's rather "unfortunate' looking compared to the old R10, but I bet it goes like a scalded ape.

Audis are for "fancy lads" and hipsters. Anyone with an ounce of masculinity wouldnt be caught dead in one.

Exactly! Because real racecar drivers would rather lose in a different car than win in a hipster-mobile

Congrats to Audi for improving the car each year. Even though they are top of the heap, they seem to really want to have the best car on the circuit hands-down. Anyway, it make you appreciate how noisy petro-cars are. When you are raceside, it seems you can just barely hear the Diesels relative to the others, yet in this video, it seems pretty loud. I watched the video of the black car in the rain as the suggested link past this one. Audi has one major advantage over their late French rival. The windshield wiper wipes BOTH sides of the windshield. The Peugeot one only wiped the left side.
