According to a report from AutoGuide, Toyota doesn't have plans to replace the aging Matrix hatchback in the United States after this year. If true, the timing coincides with the replacement for the Corolla, on which the Matrix is based, with that car slated to get its first complete redesign since 2006 (2008 in the US market).

We'd love to tell you how many Matrix models were sold by Toyota in the United States last year, but the automaker chooses to bundle Matrix sales with Corolla sales, so we have no idea. That said, we have to assume sales of the hatchback don't contribute much overall to the total number of Corolla-based machines.

We're also unsure if Toyota will choose to exit the youth-oriented compact hatchback market entirely, or if the automaker will rely instead on its hybrid Prius line and Scion models like the xB and xD.

      Good. This thing just hasn't been competitive in YEARS! So many better econobox wagons out there - Mazda 3, Elantra Touring, Forte 5, and Focus are all infinitely better.

      I had a 2003 XRS 6 speed..great car, but when the Vibe was lost Toyota did not push the Matrix..heck I dont think there has been one at a dealer in my area in a long time. I did not even know that there were still made.

      Read some reviews to see why it isn't selling well. It is near bottom of the C-Class hatchbacks and it is also one of the more expensive. Very poor bang/buck. I do love the rear flat folding seats with rugged back for throwing stuff in the back, and bonus for the folding front passenger seat for carrying long objects. I wish they could keep those seats and improve the rest of the car.

      They are too expensive vs other brands. I have been looking at awd cars to replace my 2004 corolla. the matrix is way too expensive with awd.

      I do love my 09 Matrix XRS, it gives up a little on MPG...But is sporty enough (TRD Springs & K&N CAI) for a daily driver and rock solid reliable. And you can fit everything AND the kitchen sink into it. Toyota should have put the newer 2.5L with a 6 speed for the XRS, then it would have competed just fine. Dumb decision on their part. A friend just retired his 03 after 400,000km, Great cars...just needed a little better MPG for the Second Gen to compete.

      It should have been more a hatch version of the Corolla than a standalone model. Probably would have driven down costs and up sales. That being said: I know a lot of people w/ a Matrix (or Vibe) but a lot more people w/ a plain 'ol Corolla. It leave Toyota without a C-class hatch offering (prius doesn't count)

      My 2003 Vibe is still bulletproof and has never needed anything but routine maintenance . People tend to forget that it was one of the first crossovers on the market, and the "hockey stick" D-pillar was a fresh look that is now used on almost every wagon-type vehicle made today. The design continues to look good (and much better than the nasty tank-like refreshed model) and I see tons of them on the road still. It had many innovative features (2-prong power outlet, flat-folding passenger seat, etc.) that are now commonplace. Toyota really blew it when the took everything that was good about the original models and worsened it, with worse gas mileage, lower roof, cheaper interior, etc. etc. They were ahead of the curve and ended up way behind it.

          In the US there was the CR-V, Santa Fe, Freelander, Mitsubishi Expo, and the Suzuki Aerio which all had available AWD and were in a hatchback/wagon format. The Escape hit dealers in July of 2000, also well before the Vibe and Matrix. We won't even get into what was being offered overseas, because that list would be double the size. So again, no, it wasn't even close to being one of the first.

          Yeah it was. At the time, there were a lot of heavier SUVs, a few car-based crossovers, such as the RAV-4 and Lexus RX, and occasional regular wagons. The Escape had only been out a year or so and had roughly the same interior room as the Vibe/Matrix. There weren't many hatchback-type vehicles that were roomy for their size and had a somewhat taller seating position. There had been "tall wagons" such as the Tercel, etc. many years before, but they had died out. It was a somewhat different, very useful choice at the time, that got good gas mileage and had a low price point. A few years later, a huge avalanche of similar vehicles began to show up.

          Thank you for proving my point. I did not say it was THE first, but one of the first (meaning the US, where hatchbacks of any sort had been minimal for years), and your tiny list of available models confirms that. The Santa Fe was considerably more ponderous and the Mitsubishi and Suzuki never took off. A few years later, virtually every manufacturer had some sort of similar offering in assorted sizes. Toyota wasn't a trend-setter, but they got theirs on the market (2002) slightly before the big wave hit. Then they later ruined their own concept.

          The RAV4 was the first crossover; I think the CRV in Japan. The RX300 was the first luxo-crossover.

        I had an 03 Vibe from 2006-2011. 5 speed stick. Great car, held tons of junk and got pretty nice fuel economy. The engine was definitely solid, despite being slow as piss. Can't say the same for the transmission though, right around 200,000 km some bearings in it started to go and it made a lot of noise. I don't drive hard either. I replaced it with a 6 speed from a Vibe GT but then sold it 6 months later. The 6-speed was fun but man you had to shift a lot. I've heard of a few other cases with the 5-speeds in the 03/04s crapping out around 200-250,000 km. Before that, I had a 90 Prelude, no transmission problems despite having 530 km on it. Engine burned oil like no tomorrow tho :p

      Well, apparently, Toyota measures sales by platform and then applies them to the most popular car on that platform. Do they group Camry sales with the Venza, Highlander, and Lexus ES? NO? Guess it's only on the models that got beat by Ford products in sales then...
