BMW was trying to keep its new compact crossover concept under wraps until the Shanghai Auto Show later this month, but thanks to some leaked photos via the Russian site Autowp.ru, the sleek new crossover is already creating a buzz.

The X4 crossover is a smaller version of the X6. Even though BMW says this X4 is a concept, the production model of the X4 should be very similar -- it already looks like a BMW, sharing the distinctive BMW grill and muscular lines. The production model should also feature the full LED headlights and taillights, although the 21-inch wheels may be brought down for the consumer models.

Under the hood, the X4 will most likely feature past BMW engine options, such as a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder and a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six. American versions will likely feature all-wheel drive, with less powerful gasoline and turbo engines for overseas consumers.

BMW makes great sports sedans. They always have. They make a reasonable luxury two seater semi sports car (the higher powered models post 2009 models of the Z4) - and that's about it. There is nothing that compares favorably to an M3 or M6. BMW's forays into SUVs and cross overs may have sold some cars; but it has also harmed the brand. One day they may make a truly great sports car again - who knows. But the current brand drift towards cross overs and SUVs is a dead end.
