While the limited-production Volkswagen XL1 diesel-hybrid coupe is earmarked for Europe, a small number of the super-light vehicles may find their way to this side of the pond, Plug In Cars says, citing an interview with Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning.

As many as 20 of the projected 250 XL1s may be brought to the US for testing, though how VW would get around the fact that the car's haven't been safety-tested for American roads remains to be seen. We asked VW of America's manager of product and technology communications, Mark Gillies, who poured water on the idea of the XL1 being available in the US: "Not happening. Ever." Gillies did say some XL1 might come here as part of a publicity effort or test drive, but that's about it. Thus, the car won't be sold in America, but a few examples might be spotted here.

Weighing about 1,750 pounds – about 60 pounds less than a Smart ForTwo – the XL1 gets an astonishing 260 miles per gallon. That means that even with a fuel tank that holds just 2.64 gallons, the VW can go upwards towards 700 miles on a full tank of diesel. The car combines a 0.8-liter turbocharged two-cylinder diesel engine with a 27-horsepower electric motor. It's loud and proud of its efficiency numbers, as you can read in our recent first-drive review.

The differences between the US and European cycles have nothing to do with "American" driving habits. It's simply that the EPA and the European authority have different testing and calculation procedures. The EPA procedures similate very conservative driving, but still yield much lower mpg figures than the Euro cycle for the same car. Obtaining mpg and CO2 figures from as shown on the Euro cycle while daily driving would likely require someone fairly skilled in hypermiling techniques and the patience to take about twice the time getting to the destination.

Mark Gillies, who poured water on the idea of the XL1 being available in the US: "Not happening. Ever." So it won't even be on sale in germany. as for decades they have presented several stages of this car. VW does not want to market a proper ev. It looks fine, futuristic but not to off. like the messerschmid kabinenroller. VW teases ALWAYS. And well it was to long for me. after a great golf I got a toyota and then a lexus hybrid. got to by what is on the market

I would, but then again I just took delivery of a TDI Beetle Convertible six speed MANUAL. A car that VW said would not come to the US. Yet a bunch of arm twisting and by summer VW changed their tune. Cars like this XL could come here and sell even with their NVH issues provided they could meet the legal requirements. There are enough people here to sell about anything.

Where the hell is Dan Frederiksen? Wouldn't this be his dream car? Lightweight, aerodynamic, eco-friendly, etc etc.

No, Dan would not like. High price and uses diesel.

No, he Would Not Like It, because it isn't his design. Of course, his design ignores such niceties as reliability, durability, safety, noise, handling, and good looks, all sacrificed to light-weight and high efficiency.

Reminds me a bit of the original Honda Insight. It would be nice if they made an electric version of that car. With such an aerodynamic little car, you could probably get a decent range.

Great the first nearly everlasting car (providing you don't ding it), frugal diesel engine would not be run in till about 300,000 miles with regular oil changes, would hit a million miles no problem, rust free lightweight carbon fibre might start to let it down a bit as it starts to delaminate a bit after 25 years. First lifetime commute car you could buy when you are 25 and still be driving as a daily commute when you retire at 65, how green-is-that? Only downer price, how much? Would not buy one personally myself as its only a 2 seater, which is no good for carrying my family in, l prefer something thats a utility does everything 4x4, will pull a boat, you can put the hedge trimmings in, carry DIY projects, and a huge luggage carrier when you are on vacation will swallow 15 suitcases, surf boards, kitchen sink whatever. Chevy Volt is still the most family friendly green car, if Chevy ever sell a Via Motors RHD light duty double Silverado 100 MPG E-REV in Europe, l will be straight down the local Chevy dealer and pay cash up front the first day it arrives.

I'd totally rock this beast in the States. Looks like it rolled off the set of Blade Runner or Minority Report.

You mean when driving floored towards a red light, brakes smashed 2 inches from the light to stop, revs while watching passing traffic, and another WOT run to 60 once it turns green..... The the posts about how it won't hit it's claimed mileage...... When I can drive my 22mpg highway car and easily get 26-32 AVERAGE by simply driving sane. Again I'm embarrassed to be from this clan.... we're known for being dumb.
