Last week, we tipped you off about Vampire Weekend and their new music video for the song Diane Young, a short film that consists entirely of setting fire to two perfectly nice-looking Saab 900 automobiles. The indie rock band's video – viewable by scrolling down – predictably triggered the internet ire of classic car enthusiasts – Saabophiles in particular – and word of the unrest eventually got back to the band itself.

According to music site Spinner (nb: owned by Autoblog parent AOL), the group was "stunned" at the backlash – enough that lead singer Ezra Koenig felt compelled to respond himself. According to Koenig, the band was under the impression that their record company was "looking to purchase the cheapest, oldest cars possible; they weren't trying to buy a beautiful perfect condition car." By way of apology, Koenig even goes so far as to note that bandmate Rostam Batmanglij is a keen fan of Saab.

Other reports have claimed that the cars may have been purchased under false pretenses, sold by owners who "wanted to see them go to a nice new home," but Koenig takes issue with that characterization, countering that he understood that the cars had substantial electrical problems.

Interestingly, more vitriol appears to have been spilled over the fiery deaths of these two Saabs than was drummed up by Jay Z and Kanye West in their music video for Otis, which saw the superstar rappers take a blowtorch to an exponentially costlier Maybach. Either way, Koenig and Co. appear to have at least some regret that they elected to base their video on the song's opening line, "You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves."

I do miss my base 1984 900. It was a fun, mostly reliable car except for the A/C compressor that gave out in its 11yh year of life. That car had more character and snow worthiness than just about anything I could have bought as starving college student. I regretted selling it and later learned it went well past 200k miles with no engine work.

The first line of the song reads "you torched a saab like a pile of leaves." Thats why they got a saab.

First, Saab fans...you people wouldn't even buy those cars yourselves. Hence the brand going out of business. THEN you're trying to tell people who legitimately DO own one, what they can do with it? Saab fans are the worst. I have said it before...these people all showed up to their pathetic "Save SAAB" rallies in 15-year-old beat up cars. Yeah, if I were GM I'd have been really eager to save a brand for these people who never even bothered to buy a new one.

The "save the manual" crowd are even worst. They are loud, but so little of them actually pays full prices for manual cars.

Yes, there is literally no group of car owners worse than SAAB owners. Obvious troll is obvious.

Hey Halfwhit, I mean Halfspeed, Us SAAB fans and owners appreciate the uninqueness that SAAB had in it's day. GM totally destroyed the brand and tried to make it look like a Chevy which is not what made SAAB. Get off our backs and go drive your look a like chevy sonic/spark/malibu/cobalt/cruze thing. They all look alike. Adding to the chevy problem, I took my Saab in for a fender repair and they gave me a loaner from one of their dealerships. I looked at it and said, "are you giving me that cruze? He said, a GM employee, no, I don't think it's a new cruze, I said don't tell me it's a sonic, he said maybe it's a malibu. I said keep it and i'll drive my delivery van before I drive that crap. He eventually put me in an ATS. Sad when the dealers can't tell their cars apart that they sell!

Yeah, pretty sure Saab didn't go out of business because I didn't buy a car they made 23 years ago.

They should burn all the Saabs other than the Saabaru. You will never find parts ever again.

People cry about anything. In my life I've probably known 10, or so, people who have owned a Saab at one point or another. This is completely anecdotal but no one purchased another or recommended them. Most memorably was my roommate in college, his dad had a Saab Turbo that broke down CONSTANTLY. Three times a year it left him on the side of the road or spent time in a repair shop for one reason or another.

Man are Saab fans are a touchy bunch. Coming up with scenarios that claims the band sought out a mint condition Saab and tricked the owner into selling it to them, then maliciously burned it to the ground just to piss off Saab everywhere just sounds crazy. Is it really that hard to believe that a 20+ year old, convertible, European car that lived in the northeast US (a common place for rust) was the cheapest thing they could find for their shoot? Quick glance at my local Saab Craigslist ads show quite a number of decent looking but mechanically totalled Saabs selling for next to nothing.
