The recent glimpses we've been getting of the never-was Saab 9-3 Phoenix must be like rubbing salt on the wounds of all the Saab fans out there. If that's the case, diehard Saab enthusiasts might want to look away from this. SaabWorld has uncovered a handful of shots of what was to be the next-generation 9-3 hatchback, and boy does it look sharp.

Revealing a clearer look at what we previously saw in grainy images or as a full-scale model, these new pictures show what Jason Castriota had in mind for the new car. The front end is obviously inspired by Saab's Phoenix Concept, while the rear of the car pays homage to the Saab 900 hatchback.

We like the overall look. Let us know what you think in the Comments.

This would not have saved them.

I've never been a fan of SAAB, but I must say that is a pretty good looking vehicle! Too bad it never will be.

I like this, but Saab was too far gone for many reasons, most involving GM.

Wow, that's really a shame. That's an excellent 900 homage while still being thoroughly modern and aggressive. The profile and the front three quarter shot looks great. With all the random semi hatchback cars we get these days like the Crosstour and BMW GT line, why can't we get this?!

I had heard rumors about a new Saab Sonnett before they went out of business. Those Sonnett V4s are gorgeous old cars. A Saab sports coupe like that would have stirred things up. Another retro-modern car design like this reimagined 9-3 would not have gotten Saab any additional customers, though.

BUILD THE PHOENIX NOW !! XWD ONLY! It is Saab quintessence, and we are starved for it. Someone just do it. It restores Saab's classic virtues. China, Sweden, Tata, Spyker, Jaguar, ANYONE BUT GM!, ---the UNITED NATIONS!---just DO IT and get it to the USA in two years, electric, hybrid, gasoline-powered--whatever

Nice design - remember however that it's now several yrs old. The big issue for saab was going to be the mechanicals - including engine and transmission - which I believe they were trying to license from BMW/Mini. Again - the car - with the ever useful hatch - would be a nice niche car - if the engine, transmission and everything else worked well - and if it had some class competitive mpg and could be sold for a reasonable price. In other words - a lot of IFS. Would have been nice to have seen what they would have come up with though ....

So in other words, it could have been successful if it were a good car. Interesting point.

I would buy one of these in a heartbeat. But thanks to Gov't Motors ruining SAAB, I may never have the chance to buy another new SAAB again.
