We head to Ashland, Oregon for a chance to test drive the Brammo Empulse R electric motorcycle. The Empulse R has a unique 6-speed transmission setup to provide plenty of push off the line and a top end speed of over 100 miles per hour. But can the eerily silent, gas-free Empulse R really keep up with its gas-burning sportbike rivals? We interview Brammo CEO Craig Bramscher and take the Empulse R for a spin to find out.

      I have the Zero electric bike, my third motorcycle but my first electric. I have owned it for three years and the TOTAL cost including all the "fuel" and all the tune-ups and parts is at about $300. dollars. I save a tone a money riding this bike and its fun. The Brammo is the next step (or three or four steps) up from what I have. It will be my next bike. I will pay the extra up front to get the benefits of electric.

      I rode one today at BMW San Diego. They have a demo bike and Alan was very accommodating. This thing kicks a$$. I rode an S1000RR after and the Empulse still felt great. No monkey f'in a fb like other electrics. Has awesome balance and great pickup. Final awesome point is that your optimal revs for range are high not low, so there is real reason to work the 6 speed 'box, instead of your challenge being keeping revs low like an IC engine.
