We will never stop being bitter about the lack of flying cars in our personal lives. It's not that we trust the drivers on the road with us to have yet another axis of travel to concern themselves with, but rather that we've been promised personal flying transportation our entire lives.

One ultralight pilot seems to have taken matters into his own hands, by stopping at a standard fuel station to top off his tanks. After he's finished at the pumps, he simply fires up his engine, taxis to the highway and takes off into the wild blue yonder.

Is the move safe? Probably not, but the path to excellence is often littered with danger. You can watch the whole show in the video below for yourself. As for us, we're going to start shopping for a personal aircraft of our very own.

I have absolutely no problem with what they did; they were safe, they waited for an opening in traffic, and they took off safely. Great idea, and he won't need a dash cam like all the other Ruskies...

Now that's a short takeoff! Even in Russia, this can't be legal.

Safest driver in Russia and he is not even operating a car. I hold pilots in higher regards over uneducated douchebag drivers any day of the week. Flying cars would be a insult to pilots everywhere.

I've done similar things before back in my ultralight flying days. I used to land my plane at the local KFC and pick up some fried chicken for lunch....land my plane on a horse trail, then taxi up and park the plane at the edge of the parking lot. I'd take off from the horse trail, too (didn't use the street as the Russian guy did in the video, as that's grossly illegal and unsafe). You only need about 100 feet of runway. Ultralights are amazing flying machines, so accessible and yet so unknown to many. And despite what people may tell you about their reputation, they're very safe if flown responsibly.
