According to a letter from General Motors to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, flaws in the build process of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu have led to the recall of 8,519 cars. Units built between December 6, 2011 and January 15, 2013 may have been assembled with rear suspension cradles that had insufficient torque applied to certain bolts. That out-of-spec assembly could lead to issues ranging from slight noises to a loss of vehicle control.

The problem was first noticed in December of last year by a GM test fleet driver and eventually tracked back to the improperly torqued bolts on the suspension cradle assembled through July 2012 by a supplier located not too far from the Malibu's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant. Since an official NHTSA recall notice has not been issued yet, it isn't clear whether or not Detroit-built Malibus were the only ones affected (the 2013 Malibu is also built at GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas). Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting vehicles for proper torque specs, retightening if not within specs and, in some cases, perform a rear-wheel alignment.

      Yep, I have one of the recalled Malibu's. Got my letter by FedEx last week. The dealer even called me to schedule a service appt. However, there are parts the dealer needs on hand just in case. They are not in stock yet. Little bummed about it, but they have handled it well. BTW, I love my Malibu turbo..

        I'm shopping for a new car now. It seems that Honda and Toyota is not what they used to be. Folks dying in Toyotas and Honda cannot get there tranmission right.

      Why does America only build trash that falls apart for the most part. They are good at tricking the public into buying inferior products. You people will buy any sort of trash.

      What people don't realize is that the consumer has all the power. IF you buy trash, automakers will continue to make trash just like If you don't by manuals, automakers will drop them. Yes Toyota may have more recalls since they are mentioned anytime anyone has a recall, but it is undebatable that they are still better put together than any garbage from GM.

        I feel guilty for agreeing with you cause I want to support American. Yes, the Big Three has built a lot of trash past and current, but so has Land Rover, Jaguar, VW, Audi and post merger Benz. In fact I would guess there were more problem prone cars than trouble free. Toyota makes it look easier to build a reliable car than it really is because of how good their manufacturing process is, butLook at how many moving parts there are in a car that could fail. I commend the Big Three on their progress.

          I gave you a plus by mistake, did not read yoru garbage carefully. Your statement is true, but the proof is 100% WRONG. The proof is that they even NOMINATED Kerry and AL Goron, AND, above all, that they voted for Obama WHILE he chose as his VP the 100%, USDA Choice senile moron BIDEN.

      My son was just given the choice of, Malibu, Fusion or Legacy for his next company car.HE DID NOT CHOOSE THE MALIBU1.
        Taint
        • 2 Years Ago
        @56Jalopy
        which did he choose? If it was a lease the fusion with a warranty isn't a bad choice but if he had to purchase one, definetly the Legacy.
          56Jalopy
          • 2 Years Ago
          @Taint
          Two reasons to get the Fusion: His current car is a 2010 with 70,000 miles that he not only loves but has had no problems so they have a good track record with him, Although we both like the Legacy our nearest dealer is 50 miles away so service becomes an issue. I also bought a 2012 Fusion in August 2011 and have only had oil changes so far.

        If you love road noise and constantly turning up the radio so you can hear something other than the racket a Legacy is prone to, by all means a noisy Legacy.

      Basically the comment section has turned into a GM vs. Toyota quality debate, which honestly isn't a logical debate to have, considering GM is decades behind Toyota. GM built the Geo Metro/pontiac vibe off the Corolla in their joint plant with Toyota cause they wanted to learn how to build a quality car. This is fact not opinion.

        Disagree about junk. My new Caddy rides and handles great. Got it for only $4K more than the base Honda Odyssey. Went for first oil change (early, based on my "old school" schedule) and they did the work for free. Can't beat the GM service and the smooth Caddy ride with the 308 HP engine . Love the product!
