It looks as if the Tesla Model S has a new feather to stick in its cap. DragTimes.com took the five-door down to Palm Beach International Raceway for a few sprints down the quarter mile, and the EV managed to run a best time of 12.371 seconds at 110.84 miles per hour with a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds. Those numbers were good enough for the Model S to take the crown as the world's quickest production EV according to the National Electric Drag Racing Association. NEDRA was on hand for the organization's Winter EV Nationals, and verified the new world record.

Near as we can tell, the previous record stood at 12.582 at 104.58 mph. That feat was accomplished with a Tesla Roadster owned by Zachary Vex and driven by Stella Kostolna at the Speedworld Dragstrip in Arizona. You can watch the Model S dust a Dodge Viper SRT10 in the video below. Who says you can't have any fun without internal combustion?

Can we see a picture or video of the Tesla being loaded on a trailer for the trip home? Or did they leave it plugged in at the track overnight alongside the golf carts? LOL. What a waste of money.

Seeing as that's twice the practical range of this EV, particularly since a track workout will drain the batteries even faster, I kind of doubt it.

A single drag won't deplete the batteries much. 310kW power output for 12,5 seconds = 1,1kWh used of the approx. 81,5 kWh that is available for use. Let's be mean and say 1,5 kWh used since the voltage probably sags some under 310kW load. That is still less than 2% of the battery capacity per drag. Do 5 of them and you have just used up less than 10% of your 265 mile range.

Angelo, I see now why you think this car is stupid. You think it's range is 65 miles. If that were true you would make a good case that that this car doesn't make sense. The fact that the range is, in fact, about 4 times that, though, should cause you to re evaluate your opinion. Any rational person would. The question remains whether you are rational. I live about 30 miles from a supercharger. There's nearly nowhere in California I can't go, that is, if I'm willing to stop for a half hour every 3 and a half. But I do that anyway on a road trip.

Assuming 13 seconds of full power (310kW), you would use 1.1kWh or 3.5 miles of EPA range for each run. Given the pack is 85kWh and total EPA range is 265 miles, they have plenty of range to spare to go home.

@AngeloD Bringing up something other than range anxiety this time. Equally wrong though. Tesla received a $465 million dollar loan from the Bush created ATVM loan program. It's a loan that they have already begun paying back. Tesla has almost all of next years cars sold which comes to almost $2 billion in sales. They have bought and refurbished an unsed factory. They have employed over 2000 people that are now paying taxes. So that loan looks to be a spectacular investment by the US government by creating much more income than was loaned out. And the toy car, as you call it, has already won every major car award that it has been in the running for. Car experts that have driven it say it is revolutionary. You, who has never driven it, need to put the accomplishment down to make yourself feel better about your dull life.

"hamstrung": Severely restrict the efficiency or effectiveness of. As in a car with a 90-100 mile range that requires right around 12 hours to recharge. @AngeloD You spend even a little effort to be more informed. Instead you just say what you think is correct but is actually completely wrong. Even the smallest amount of research proves you don't have a clue what you're writing about. Let's focus on each of your points. You say the car is hamstrung while the video shows it beating the ICE car it's up against. You say the car only gets 90-100 mile range when 3000 people who drive the car daily disagree with you. At this point there have been around 70 different reviews of the car and not one person has commented that the car gets more than half the range it claims. So either people who have driven the car are wrong or you are just a troll acting like an @ss. The answer is obvious there. You say it is a waste of money but 18,521 people in just the USA have reserved one of the cars. There are 2,659 more people in Europe that have also put $5K down to get one. I suppose over 20K people disagree with you. Comparing this car to a golf cart is the same as comparing a rider lawn mower to a Cadillac - absolutely asinine comparison. Care to make any other, easy to dispute, comments? AngeloD? Troll.

@wooootles - what does range have to do with miles per unit? So there are other $100K cars that can perform similar while getting 15MPG tops. Besides "only" being able to go 265 miles, find another fault with this car. If this car had a small range extender in its frunk, while still having a huge trunk, people would still complain. "it can only go 700 miles on a charge, but can it do loop-de-loops? I think cornering and stopping it fairs just fine against ANY car near its price. Give me your list of cars that are: 1. Built in the US, using US technology, parts, and manufacturing. 2. Have more than 20 cubic feet of trunk space. 3. Seat 3 or more. 4. Get more than 50MPG. 5. Do 0-60 in less than 4.5 seconds. 6. Corner and stop better. I bet your list looks like this: 1. I suppose that means you don't know what you're writing about. Not surprising since you are a troll with nothing better to do. Want to have luigi tony agree with you like you've done before? You know. To try and get someone to agree with you, even though it's yourself. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. Sound familiar? alisatair/thor/luigi/knodoctor/peter?

Really? I'm surprised. They write the same way. Thanks for the heads up, yomama.

A frighteningly insane Viper 10 YEARS AGO that probably did a 12.6 in the quarter here instead of the 11.8 it's supposed to do with a driver that doesn't suck, damn greeny propaganda...

Or the video is doctored. Which is more likely, because the only Tesla videos we see is a 12.37 sec car destroying 11-second cars.

It ran what it ran. Top fuel dragsters run 10 second quarters all the time. If you can't run it every time, than so what, your car "could" run this or it "could" run that. They should wet the track and do it again. Or put 4 people in the Viper and do it again. THE ICE lost, get over it already.

No, I don't care for the Viper, but I just hate misinformation. At this rate, they can put a 2013 Nissan GT-R against the Model S, lose by doing a 13-sec drag time instead of 11-flat, and you greenies will proclaim it's a legit win for Tesla. I didn't even say a single crap about it being an electric drivetrain.

Boo-hoo. Yeah it beat that old car, but it couldn't beat the new car. Boo-hoo. You just can't use that organ for thinking, can you little woooties? That's not the point. And you don't get the point. You can't see beyond the fact that it's electric. No one has told you not to buy a Viper. The fact that a seven seat sedan, made in the USA, can even compete, and in this case beat, a two seater sports supercar. No one is saying the Viper is a bad car. The Model S is a great accomplishment. You want to try and put that down because it scares you.

You hate misinformation? That's an obvious lie. Why? Because you've already posted, numerous times, that the Model S has a range of 90 to 100 miles when that is easily proven wrong. You post nothing but misinformation, dude. Get over yourself. You are a troll. Why you troll is for whatever reason you have. It doesn't change the fact that you are trolling this article. That's a fact.

I didn't say anything about the Tesla having a 90-100 mi range. Maybe you should quit putting words in my internet mouth? And also, may you should stop with the Ad Hominems? It's clear that's what you're resorting to when you're wrong. You get so mad.

I apologize. You are correct. It was AngeloD that made that comment. I retract my calling you a liar. I would remove the post but this commenting system does not allow it.

Yowza! And mounting your GoPro (or whatever) to just look behind you for a drag race is pretty much the epitome of confidence.
