Remember the Nismo Leaf Nismo Concept show at the Tokyo Motor Show more than a year ago? To refresh your memory, it was a Nissan Leaf gussied up with an aerodynamic body kit, new wheels and a few cosmetic enhancements inside the cabin – the motor and powertrain remain unchanged. In any case, it appears that the green vehicle has received the green light for limited production.

Nismo chief Shoichi Miyatani has reportedly confirmed to Autocar that the zippier-looking electric Nissan will head down the assembly line in Japan this summer. But instead of a world-wide launch, the five-door will be sold only in the automaker's domestic market until consumer reaction is gauged. Even then, such low volumes will hardly justify expanding to other markets, Miyatani added.

In other news, it appears that the Leaf RC race car program – hinted as a one-make race series – is probably not going to happen.

"But instead of a world-wide launch, the five-door will be sold only in the automaker's domestic market until consumer reaction is gauged." WHY wouldn't Nissan want ALL their Leafs to look better?

What a crock of crap! Same old battery, same old problem with thermo management, and same old limited range. And stupid people want to pay extra for some plastic add-ons?

All Leaf's should look like this, not just the Nismo Version.

wow....and here I thought the Prius TRD kit was ridiculous. So the leaf can stumble around the track for a lap or two then sit in the pit for the next day or so, recharging? not exactly a f1 style pit stop.

A polished turd is still...a turd. And a leaf with a body kit and rims is still...a leaf.

Not even a suspension upgrade to improve its [theoretical] track performance. Of course, "production electric car" and "track" don't really go in the same sentence.

Repeat after me; "The current Leaf is Not a Race Car." What Nissan has proposed is a street car with Nismo PR mods for fan boys.. The RC is a track car in every sense except one....the drive line with the street components misses the mark...if you want the RC to make the full grade as a track car, it needs more power, period. So,where are the high energy batteries? where is the 500 plus ft/lb motor?, where is the 5000 amp motor controller? Bad, Bad Nissan! Quite selling PR and really do the job.

It's not as if electric cars can't be fast (look at the Tesla Roadster), but they are so heavy and there is the range issue that I don't think this would be a good idea.

Wow…. Almost like: The New Nissan Leaf Nismo, now with 2 AA batteries included for more power… And an 'aero kit'… Just me or Nismo was synonym of performance? And then?

Am I looking at "Leaf," "Nismo," and "production" in the same sentence? Is it April 1st already?
