The all-electric 2013 Fiat 500e probably won't turn a profit, but that doesn't mean Fiat and Chrysler engineers haven't done a good job ramping up the hatchback's fuel economy numbers. Chrysler has just announced that the little EV has been rated at 116 Miles Per Gallon Equivalent (MPGe) combined. The EV will get 122 MPGe in the city, and highway efficiency is rated at 108 MPGe. As for range – which of course varies greatly in the real world – the official number is an impressive 87 miles.

To compare, other small EVs have been rated this way (combined/city/highway):
  • 2013 Smart ED: 107/122/93 MPGe and a 68-mile range
  • 2013 Scion iQ EV: 121/138/105 MPGe and a 38-mile range
  • 2013 Honda Fit EV: 118/132/105 MPGe and a 82-mile range
  • 2013 Mitsubishi i: 112/126/99 MPGe and a 62-mile range
  • 2012 Nissan Leaf: 99/106/92 and a 73-mile range
That means that the 2013 Fiat 500e has (for now, at least) more range and highway MPGe than any other vehicles in its class. Some larger EVs can go further, of course. The official EPA fuel consumption rate is 29 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 miles thanks to an efficient 111-horsepower electric motor. Charging the 24-kWh battery should take less than four hours from a 240-watt Level 2 source. The EV goes on sale, in California, at least, in the second quarter of 2013, and we already know the car will get a sexy introduction to the masses.

January 4, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has rated the stylish Fiat 500e's highway-cycle performance at 108 MPGe, which is unsurpassed by any electric vehicle (EV) on the U.S. market.

MPGe is the EPA-devised measure for determining how many miles an EV can travel on a quantity of battery-generated electricity that has same energy content as a gallon of gasoline.

EPA testing also has indicated that, when fully charged, the Fiat 500e will travel about 87 miles, which is best-in-class and better than all U.S.-market EVs produced by high-volume manufacturers.

In addition, the EPA estimates the annual cost to power the Fiat 500e is, coincidentally, $500.

The estimate is calculated by factoring electricity price projections into 15,000 miles of travel at a vehicle's combined city/highway performance rating. The Fiat 500e has a 116-MPGe city/highway rating; its city-cycle rating is 122 MPGe.

EPA testing estimates the car's energy-consumption rate at just 29 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 miles. Further, the Fiat 500e scores a perfect "10" on two EPA scales that reward vehicles for low tailpipe emissions.

The battery-electric Fiat 500e is, of course, a zero-emissions vehicle.

The 2013 500e builds on the Fiat brand's successful small-car formula, while adding an all-new, battery-electric powertrain that produces 111 horsepower (83 kW). It recharges in less than 4 hours with its Level 2 (240 volt) on-board charging module (OBCM).

Supplementing its distinctive styling cues are eight efficiency-inspired exterior enhancements that contribute to a 13 percent improvement in aerodynamics, compared with the already fashionable Fiat 500 Lounge.

      Did you see that Ford actually delivered 167 Ford Focus Electrics last month? Even the compliance cars are starting to sell at a moderate pace. Obviously the Volt and the Leaf are getting the most attention, but there is room for big players like Ford to gain some BEV experience so that they stay in the game that will be hitting the big time in a few years.

      Someone tell me what is impressive about an 87-mile range? You probably couldn't drive 25 miles downtown to work and back in the winter because the batteries would discharge in the cold all day. Maybe there's an explanation why Tesla's S-Coupe can go 230-260 miles on one charge yet all the American EV's are struggling to even make 100. Maybe the auto industry is not MOTIVATED by low sales and profit to extend the range on money-losers, right GM? Right Ford? Right Chrysler? Right Japanese Big 3? Maybe all the pressure from the oil industry is actually working to sabotage and dilute interest and research in electric, natural gas and hydrogen cars. That about sum it up auto industry? You ever think that with low-range electric vehicles that MAYBE BUILDING ELECTRIC GAS STATIONS BETWEEN POINTS A & B for EV's to stop and recharge on long trips might be helpful? No. Anyone see many commercials for EV's or NG or HYDR. vehicles? No. Does anyone even remotely think that MAYBE the auto/oil industry is only interested in perpetuating vehicles that emit chemicals toxic to all life for the sake of profits? Let's not forget, HUMANS run the auto industry, HUMANS run the oil industry....HUMANS with vested interests in fat wallets no matter the cost.

I may be going out on limb here but I think the reason why a Tesla can go much farther than the other EVs is that it has a battery that is nearly 4 times as large as the other cars. BTW, the Tesla is an American EV.

      "87 miles of range"...... city, highway or combined?? My guess is that the author INTENTIONALLY didn't tell you it's on the much higher "city" range number. If that was the case the Smart ED is much closer at 79miles of range and has a higher combined "mpge" rating than the 500e. not saying that one car is better than the other. I'm pointing out the article fails to provide the only information that matters to make a direct comparison.

      You can throw all these EV EPA tests and figures away. They mean nothing in the real world. And, what in the h**l is with the idea of equating gasoline mileage with electron mileage, anyway...nonsense! I propose a real world test to give a driver an idea of what to expect of an EV when driving it on the freeway. it was created by a "Famous Blog Commenter," and is called "The Ladson Test . It's simple: Drive the car on a spec dyno at 65 mph until the control electronics halt the car to save the battery. If the distance traveled is 100 miles or more, it passed the test...if not, pass until a better EV comes along or you can afford a Tesla.

        Well, the MPGe number is somewhat useful. First of all, consumers will learn that electric cars are always more efficient than gas cars. And even though the comparison to gas cars is not that useful, the number is good in comparing different EVs against each other. For example, you'll learn that the CODA is NOT EFFICIENT at all. Something is wrong with that car's design.

      I think this will be a very popular little electric car, it should be winner for Fiat and help kick start the mass production revolution of electric cars in a lot higher volumes. It will be very popular in Europe as well the 500e just seems to tick all the right boxes.
