We all know how safe Volvo cars are, but a European junkyard has decided to put it to the test by crashing, jumping and rolling the life out of an 850 wagon. While government tests use automated systems to crash new cars, the guys in this video do so with a driver behind the wheel. Aside from what looks like a safety harness and roll bar for the driver, it seems like this car is otherwise bone stock.

Not wanting to spoil the fun for you, we'll just point out that at the start of the video, our hero car looks pretty flawless, and by the end, well, let's just say the Craigslist ad for the car would say "needs some body work." Check out the video below to watch some stunts that even the Duke Boys might shy away from.

so what? how many of these has been produced? check ebay and buy as many as you can, then rest in rust great volvos. Respect if you bring even one 850 back to factory condition and keep it in your garage.

Destroy perhaps good running cars that were worth less than $4500 (or they wouldn't have turned then in) and that got lousy gas mileage. It's not like it was such a horrific loss to still be worrying about it all these years later.

I used to own 1997 850 GLT wagon. And I did lost control and hit a huge light pole beside the highway. The car doesnt have any sign of dent or anything but that huge light pole went down easily. Volvo 1 - highway pole 0

These old volvos are awesome. So much better then the crap cars everyone keeps churning out today. Mad respect for machines that can take a beating. Despite a few quirks, Volvo was all about using the highest quality materials for durability and also safety. IMO, the most important aspects.

Military budgets could be seriously reduced if they put these into service.

pretty crazy. IIHS should take one of these and do a small overlap crash test. I bet it would get an A+
