Lamborghini is planning to roll out a new car for the brand's 50th anniversary. Automotive News Europe reports the Italian automaker will unveil a special one-off machine to commemorate the date next year. CEO Stepahn Winkelmann has been tight-lipped about the vehicle, saying coyly, "It will not be a revival or a retro." Fortunately, with 2013 right around the corner, we shouldn't have to wait long to see what Lamborghini has up its sleeves for the special car.

The company has other big plans for the celebration and has reportedly invited owners to ship their cars to Milan, where they will then parade through Tuscany, Rome and Bologna before arriving at the Lamborghini factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

It's a good time for a party. Lamborghini has seen strong sales through 2012 despite the faltering European economy, and the Aventador coupe and roadster each have an 18-month waiting list.

They should celebrate by building the most outrageous and controversial car yet: an economy car.

Sorry, but a "one off" does not qualify as a new model. As cool as the Aventador J was, I've almost forgotten it by now because there is only one and I will never see it. Lamborghini should celebrate their 50th the same way Ferrari celebrated their 40th: by building a full production run of epic supercars!

The radical designs that Lamborghini use to be known for has stagnated ever since it stopped being an independent company. I don't think that any of its owners since Ferruccio Lamborghini have utilized the full spirit of the company. Yes, they are still stunning cars on a technical level but they are all evolutions of the same basic design that began with the Countach in 1974. Under the German ownership of the VW Group, the brand has become further "porsche-ified" by continuing to beat the same basic design for what has been almost 40 years now. I can't imagine that this new model will be any different.

You know, they are one of the few companies that can a one off correctly, and you know they will sell.
