The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just announced that Porsche is recalling several hundred 911 GT3 sportscars, built for the 2010 model year. The cars in question are being recalled for potentially faulty rear-wheel hubs. These hubs cold be prone to failure under "certain driving conditions." The specific driving conditions in question are not noted. If the rear-wheel hub fails, one could lose control of the track-oriented Porsche, which would not be pretty at speed.

455 units of the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3, produced between May 15, 2009 and February 11, 2010, are involved in the recall. Porsche is notifying owners, and has stated that it will replace the rear wheel hubs, free of charge. Additionally, Porsche will change the service intervals, as the current intervals may be "insufficient to prevent wheel hub failure." Porsche is recalling certain model year 2010 911 GT3 vehicles manufactured May 15, 2009, through February 11, 2010. The rear wheel hubs may be prone to failure under certain driving conditions. Also, the original, suggested maintenance intervals may be insufficient to prevent wheel hub failure.

If the rear hub fails, there may be a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wheel hubs on the rear axle free of charge. The service interval specifications will also be revised and provided to owners as part of Porsche's owner notification letter. The recall is expected to begin in December 2012.       These things have become to easy to drive, so losing a rear wheel will help bring back that old snap oversteer!

      There is a lot more to this story. The handful of failures that have happened have all occurred (to my knowledge) on race tracks, where cars are subjected to SIGNIFICANTLY higher stresses than they would in even the most aggressive street driving. There isn't a manufacturer on the planet that will doesn't specifically exclude racetracks from their warranty. While Porsche really has no obligation to address this problem, I think it is the right move to do so, as the vast majority of GT3 owners regularly take them to the track, and the reality is that the fact that they are so durable there is a major buying motivation for those customers. I'm not sure there is another manufacturer out there that would stand behind their product the way Porsche is in this situation.
