Last month, GM sold 1,519 Chevrolet Volt vehicles, up from 1,139 in November 2011 but way down from the record-setting 2,961 Volts sold in October 2012. And here we thought maybe Chevy was on the way to breaking the 3,000 barrier for the first time. GM says that tight supply constrained deliveries, which makes the recent production shut-down seem questionable, but that was to retool for the current model year as much as anything.

The Volt's decline was countered by a slight decline in Nissan Leaf sales, down from 1,579 units in October to 1,539 last month. This means November 2012 was the first time since January 2012 that the Leaf has outsold the Volt. In November 2011, Nissan sold 672 Leafs.

The field of plug-in vehicles is getting a nice and crowded these days, but it's always interesting to see how the first two models out of the gate are still doing. We'll have our larger write-up of November's green car sales coming soon.

GM U.S. Sales Increase 3 percent in November
2012-12-03

DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today reported its highest November sales in the United States since 2007, with deliveries up 3 percent versus a year ago to 186,505 vehicles. Year-over-year sales to retail customers were essentially equal to a year ago and sales to fleet customers were up 16 percent.

"In November, we saw strong car and crossover sales and we continue to make inroads with younger customers, import drivers and buyers focused on fuel economy," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. "Sales at Cadillac and Buick are benefiting from the buzz generated by new products, including the Buick Verano, Cadillac XTS and Cadillac ATS."

Sales of GM passenger cars increased 19 percent in November compared with a year ago. Crossovers were up 9 percent and sales of trucks were down 11 percent. Buick and Cadillac had their best November sales since 2006 and 2007, respectively.
  • Passenger car sales were up 77 percent at Cadillac, 22 percent at Buick and 13 percent at Chevrolet.
  • Combined sales of mini, small and compact cars were up 51 percent compared with a year ago, driven by the new Buick Verano and Chevrolet Spark, a 27 percent increase for the Chevrolet Cruze, a 33 percent increase for the Chevrolet Volt and a 12 percent increase for the Chevrolet Sonic.
  • Crossover sales were driven by a 44 percent increase for the GMC Terrain, a 23 percent increase for the Buick Enclave and a 13 percent increase for both the Chevrolet Equinox and the Cadillac SRX.
  • Sales of large pickups were 8 percent lower in part due to unexpectedly high competitive incentive activity, which GM did not match.
The average transaction prices for GM vehicles increased $750 per unit versus a year ago, even though the company's car and crossover mix increased from 56 percent of total sales to 62 percent. ATPs also increased about $190 per unit from October, when the car and crossover mix was 60 percent.

"The East Coast's ongoing recovery from Hurricane Sandy helped drive the November SAAR materially higher, but it benefited our competitors more than GM, since they rely on the region for more of their sales," McNeil said.

"It's clear that the industry will come in at the high end of our full-year sales forecast," he added. "Exactly how much growth we can expect next year will depend in part on how Congress and the president resolve the fiscal cliff issue. Consumers hate uncertainty, so an agreement on ways to reduce long-term federal budget deficits could remove an impediment to growth."

Nissan North America Sets New November Sales Record
-Nissan and Infiniti brands each post record November sales-


FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today reported record November U.S. sales of 96,197 units versus 85,182 units a year earlier, up 12.9 percent. Nissan Division set a new November record, with sales up 9.8 percent for the month over the prior year at 84,300 units. Sales of Infiniti vehicles were 11,897, up 41.2 percent over the prior year, also a November record.

NISSAN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nissan Division posted sales of 84,300 units, up 9.8 percent from last November's 76,754 units, making it Nissan's best November ever.
  • Pathfinder SUV sales rose 249.5 percent to 8,097 units, led by the all-new 2013 Pathfinder that went on sale in November.
  • The all-electric Nissan LEAF recorded strong sales of 1,539 units in October, up 129 percent from the prior year at 672 units.
  • Rogue crossover sales hit a new November record at 12,662 units, an increase of 16.8 percent versus year-ago sales of 10,845.
  • Altima sales remained strong in November at 20,305 units, with year-to-date deliveries up 14.8 percent over its 2011 total.
"Nissan's significant portfolio refresh of five new models in 15 months is showing results with the new Pathfinder driving sales of the model up nearly 250 percent," said Al Castignetti, vice president, Nissan Division.

INFINITI HIGHLIGHTS
  • Infiniti QX sales of 2,121 was an increase of 46.7 percent in November, the best month in the full-size luxury SUV's history.
  • The all-new Infiniti JX 7-passenger luxury crossover had sales of 2,529 units in November, and 18,966 have been delivered since it went on sale in March.
  • Overall, total sales of 6,275 for all Infiniti crossovers and sport utility vehicles in November more than doubled versus prior year.
  • The Infiniti G Line had an increase of 7.3 percent for the month, with 4,838 sport sedans, coupes and convertibles being delivered.
  • Infiniti had the best November in its history.
"November was a fantastic month for Infiniti, with sales of each of our crossovers and sport utility vehicles showing an increase and contributing to the best November since we started sales in 1989," said Ben Poore, vice president, Infiniti Americas. "We expect showroom traffic to remain strong through the holiday gift-giving season, as our Winter Limited Engagement Event continues through January 2."

NOTE: To ensure consistency in global sales reporting, Nissan North America calculates monthly variances on a straight-percentage basis, unadjusted for the number of selling days. November had 25 selling days both in 2012 and 2011.

      Chevy Volt sales tanked by nearly half compared to the previous 3 months of 2800+ sales. Normally, there's very little chance Oct-Nov, so this is a big surprise. It seems like Chevy has a production issue, and they only built 2,300-odd Volt (but 2,700 Malibu - WTF?). Nevertheless, Chevy still broke 20k for 2012, being the first plug-in to hit 20k sales USDM. With 20,828 sold, Chevy will need an incredible month of 4k+ cars to break 25k, but it is probably doable given the big bump that GM customarily sees. The question is whether GM will have 4,000+ cars available to sell, given only 3k cars on lot today. Leaf did pretty well - CYTD total is 8,330 so they comfortably beat GM's 2011 total. Nissan has a shot at breaking 10k if they move a very strong 1,700 in December. If they're supply constrained, they need 1,300 to beat last year. However, their sales suggest 1,000 might be more likely, given how Nissan was sandbagging earlier.

        Finally found something from GM confirming they screwed the pooch on Volt supply: "Volt sales were modest in November due to availability in most key markets including California, our largest market," said GM spokesperson Michele Malcho. "We had a really low daily stock for most of the month," she continued, "and expect to have more Volts available in December." (from Green Car Reports)

      I'm happy people are warming up to the Leaf. Hope Volt recovers. Both are fantastic cars. Interesting how C-Max Energi and other plug-ins will be doing, and if dealers will have any incentive to steer ICE buyers towards them. So far it looks like most of them don't understand the technology, and don't want to. That's a real bummer, we may end up with all plugin makers fighting for the same pool of buyers.

        @Vlad: "Hope Volt recovers." GM has demonstrated production of 1000+ Volt/Ampera per week, but for whatever reason, decided to push Malibu production last month, and almost no Ampera. Which makes no sense, because GM should been running Volt/Ampera production full-tilt to close out 2012. The mind boggles as to what GM has been thinking here.

          Bizzare. It's like OEMs and dealers can't make up their minds on these cars. The Energi represents significant additional price premium, which translates into dealer and OEM profit. They should be pushing these things *HARD*.

      For 2012, Government Motors (GM) had a goal of about 45,000 Volt sales in the U.S. Through the first 11 months of the year, GM sold just 20,828 ... 46.3% of the annual goal. The base model MSRP, including shipping, is $39,995. Discounts up to nearly $10,000 were offered in August. A replacement battery costs $23,805, but an auto repair shop cannot buy one. Your Volt must be taken to a Chevy dealer and the service department, not the parts department, will order a battery. When delivered, the Chevy service department will replace the battery. Higher priced gasoline is required. The owner’s manual states: "Use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. If the octane is less than 91, you could damage the engine." newsandopinions dot net

      The fact that PIP and LEAF numbers were maintained in Nov. is a clear indicator that the Chevy Volt had supply issues. It is highly unlikely that in 30 days, demand for PIP and LEAF remained the same and that demand for the Volt suddenly dropped by 50%. I've had communications form several dealers that have been selling Volts regularly. They all have been complaining the last month that they had plenty of customers lined up, but no Volts available to sell them. We were surprised the last two months that Volt sales numbers were maintained despite the shutdown. It took until Nov. before the impact was finally felt...

        Not necessarily. As pointed out below, the C-Max Energi has hit the market in some places. If you add the number of C-Max Energi cars sold to the Volts sold, it is close to the previous Volt number. The PHEV sector is dividing a bit since there is now the Volt, PiP, and C-Max Energi.

          Smurf, Leaf and Volt are often looked at as direct competitors, but I don't think they are. Not only they are two very different cars in almost every respect, they represent two different philosophies. And the PiP is more of a car for Prius faithful, and Toyota is about the only OEM that actually upsells to plugins.

      Maybe the C-Max Energi played a role in the Volt sales drop. While it is not a full EV, so there is less direct competition with the Leaf, it would compete directly with a plug-in hybrid like the Volt.

        The 2013 Volt has been out for a while so that doesn't explain it. The 2013 Leaf is not out yet, but it's still able to sustain sales for now (using incentives). I guess the "official" explanation is limited supply, but given Volt sales have been climbing the last couple of months, it seems unlikely GM didn't plan beforehand to handle it.

        The 2013 Volt has been out for a while now. The US-made 2013 LEAF will be introduced early next year. There are indications of increased range (~14%) and a lower-cost model (potentially less than $30k before govt. incentives). Remains to be seen what the exact numbers are.

      I think C-Max Energi and PiP sales are cutting into Volt's sales. If it is true, people really prefer midsize interior with 5 seats especially if their commute is short (11-20 miles).

      I have no idea. BTW, every single number there is fact-based and data-driven, and the conjectures are relatively limited, based on historical trends going back years.       Globally, cars will have to move to electric miles as a matter of simple operating efficiency, and it's just a matter of how quickly the economies of scale enable the transition. I guarantee 20 years from now, it's going to look very different.
