Last year, the Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SE won a Car and Driver comparison test of mid-size sedans, beating the Honda Accord V6 and Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. A couple of months later, the same Passat model won a mid-size comparo from Motor Trend against the Hyundai Sonata GLS and Toyota Camry LE. Earlier this year, the VW won an even larger C/D comparison test, beating the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Accord EX-L, Sonata SE, Kia Optima EX and Camry SE.

That's a convincing string of victories, but they're all against the old hotness. So C/D put the Passat 2.5 SE against the freshest mid-sized competitors, the all-new-for-2013 versions of the Ford Fusion SE EcoBoost, Honda Accord EX and Nissan Altima 2.5 SV, and, well, you'll have to see if the German's enormous back seat and good chassis were enough to keep it on top. You can find out how they all ranked, and why, in the video below.

Ford needs to come up with some original designs. Their Mitsubishi/Aston ripoff styling just makes me laugh.

The grille is the only thing on this car reminiscent of Aston Martin. And I don't recognize anything Mitsubishi on this car. The overall design of this car just looks like a refined last-gen Mondeo.

I am sorry the Boring Fusion is not the most "Extravagently Styled" Car of the bunch. It is the most bloated and ponderous looking. Ill take the Accord please.

Ford figured out how to keep their cars from exploding yet?

Ford got a chance and they failed. People only talks about the Aston ripoff and not about the car. Camry still the winner, hate to say it.

Camry? Lol for old people! Fusion has my vote! Accord is as boring as wonder bread.

I would have understood your point of view, a more powerful Fusion would be a winner.. However, whats this Camry POS you speak of, a car so crappy it didn't even make the top 5.

Why do you say "aston ripoff"? When Ford designed this vehicle, they owned Aston-Martin. Its a family resemblance.

The only place the Camry beats any of these cars is in sales, and that is because the general populace are uneducated.

Fusion won, but like the 3-series, C&D can't have their precious Accord lose and upset their "XX years on the 10 Best list."

theres somke creedence to what you state, but theres no doubt in my mind its a toss up between the Honda and Fusion, i dont think you can go wrong with either, and at least it shows Honda is gettin a heart beat back...thats said the rear end SCREAMS Genesis....

No, the rear end of the Genesis screams 6th gen Accord. It always kills me when people accuse Honda of copying the Koreans, when the latter are the ones who did it first.

With world economy still in a turmoil, it was a smart move for Aston Martin to enter the large 4-door family car market.

I'll take the Accord over the Passat. VW reliabilitly is questionable. I'm never buying anything VW again until they demonstrate good reliability across their model range. If you keep it 10 years, it's likely the VW will cost you thousands more to maintain and repair. No thanks.

The accord looks so beautiful in person. Handsome and chiseled. I saw one the other day and couldn't believe it was an accord. i thought it was a 50-90k car.

Since when did BMW's style appeal to anyone other than a Parvenu? The Honda looks much better than the ugly german.
