Aside from the general lack of snow in the Midwest earlier this year that hampered our ability to properly play with our Blizzak-equipped Mini Contryman long-term test vehicle, the biggest problem we had with this crossover during the year we spent with it was the transmission. On four different monthly updates (September, October, November and June), all in the hands of different Autoblog editors, the Countryman's clutch was called out for being too finicky, leading to many stall outs. Apparently, we weren't alone in our assessment of the Countryman's clutch woes.

According to MotoringFile, Mini has updated the Countryman with a different clutch material and improved software. This much-needed change is being implemented starting this month, but Mini hasn't said what it is doing about existing 2011 and 2012 Countryman models that are afflicted with this problem.

Head over to MotoringFile to see the full official statement from Mini USA on this issue.

Great car, but my clutch burned out at 15.5k...they replaced it alright, but if it happens again-I'm out or make me an equal trade for an automatic. This is my second Mini...my '03 after multiple problems is still running strong at 154k and have not replaced the clutch once-just had an adjustment.

      They just fixed mine!

To all you trolls, how about a half-full cup? An OEM is actually admitting there's an issue (which they didn't have to do and mostly never do) and promising to fix it. By the way, anyone who says they had the same problem in MINI's other cars - stop blaming your lack of skill on someone else. You're like a bad musician blaming their instrument. I've driven 8 different Coopers and Clubmans over the last year and none of them had a clutch issue. Did I buck a little? Sure, but I assure you after a couple of weeks, its second nature - just like every other car.

First, Mini has not yet promised to fix currently owned CMs. Second, Mini has had a history of bad transmissions starting with the crappy CVT. I think you need to crawl out of your basement and get some fresh air.

What will MINI do? Nothing. Just like they have done nothing for thousands of failed power steering pumps, convertible top carriages, power door locks, etc. Quite possibly, MINI/BMW is the worst of any major manufacturer in addressing and self-correcting design flaws, even when said flaws are overwhelmingly documented, reported to NHTSA, filed for lawsuit, and safety-related.

Agreed. Would add that the Mini arm is worse than BMW.

Maybe this is what happens when a loud minority of enthusiasts begs a manufacturer to offer a manual transmission in a car/CUV not intended for enthusiasts.

After owning the CM for 1 1/2 years. I felt no confidence in the weak clutch for the long term of this car. So I sold it! Nice job Mini!

Too bad according to autoblog's own "by the numbers" reports MINI is killing it in sales...

Fiat is selling more 500s per month than Mini is selling Coopers though. Disturbingly, the bulbous Countryman is nabbing the highest sales numbers.

I had similar experiences with the clutch in the MINI Coupe.

Clutches have been an issue for years. A guy at work had a Mini, and the slave cylinder blew 700 miles before the warranty ended. It was replaced under warranty, but then failed again about 1,500 miles later, after the warranty was out. He was stuck in a lane between parking spaces, and had to try to move car out of the lane. It ruined the clutch, resulting in a $3600 repair bill (the dealer said, "Sorry, you're out of warranty"). Once it was fixed, he traded the Mini on a Nissan Xterra, which he's still driving, four years later.

Still rather have a finicky, stall-prone clutch than an automatic.

I counted my lucky star that my Mini Cooper S had a clutch that lasted til 56K, then it was extremely difficult to engage. Fortunately, my lease was up at that time. Mini claimed the clutch is wear and tare item and is not covered by warranty. They still charged me for abnomal wear on one of the run flat tire for $300, not prorated. Were they expecting me to put the MINI in my living room and not drive it for 3 years?? I would never lease another MINI product again.
