The rumor has been that Lexus will soon have a motorsports-only LFA to supplement the mostly stock LFA it has been using in races like the Nürburgring 24-Hour. This past summer the Internet happened upon a couple of photos of this supposed LFA GTE prototype (right), an endurance racer that could perhaps be seen at next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. That prediction could be boosted by the Japanese company informing the site Lexus Enthusiast "We have no plan to use the LFA for the 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours race."

Without providing any details, Lexus race driver Akira Iida tweeted a photo of an LFA racer on a rolling road, and it is almost a dead black ringer for the car from a few months ago. While we scrounge for more info, it's nice to start imagining another top maker battling through the pack of Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and Mercedes models already in the series.

I'm sure you know this, but that isn't a full size car. It's a scaled down model built for the wind tunnel.

Correct, but the one pictured in the garage is a full scale real vehicle

Nice to see they are still using their old Formula 1 workspace and wind tunnels, and perhaps most of their former F1 engineers too. Those alone would quickly make them a force not to be reckoned with in any racing series that isn't F1. Its just astonishing how quickly their LMP1 car has become so competitive. And a GTe car would only make sports car racing even better.

Can we talk about what looks like an LS with a big wing on the back behind the LF-A GTE? Click on that photo and you'll go to Auto Guide; you'll see the suspect LS hiding in the background.

Although I do feel that the Japanese automotive industry has lost much of what made them successful in the past, it is refreshing to see something like this to remind me that not all is lost. Japanese cars aren't typically my cup of tea when it comes to the sports car department...but I can definitely appreciate something like this existing.

This car will be racing at the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring again next year as a one-off race. I'm fairly certain it will NOT race at Le Mans.
