Time Magazine has released its list of the best inventions of 2012, and while a few automotive products made the cut, the Tesla Model S was the only vehicle to nab the honor this year. The magazine cites the electric sedan's sexy aesthetics, lofty 265-mile range and touch-screen cabin controls as reasons for the laurel, though Tesla's network of supercharger stations certainly factored in as well. This is just the latest in long list of accolades for the Model S. As you may recall, Motor Trend recently called the EV the most important car since the Ford Model T, and Automobile Magazine named the five-door its Automobile of the Year.

A total of 25 inventions made the Time list in all, including the self-inflating tires we saw from Goodyear earlier this year. From whimsical indoor clouds crafted by Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde to a potentially life-saving in-home HIV test, the selections showcase the diversity of human innovation. Check out the complete list here.

They also need to refine its electric exhaust note. That way it can win Grammy awards as well.

peter nixon is a cowardly troll that needs to rant about this exceptional car. He is crazy and obnoxious. It's likely he and his posts will be removed soon. He will return under a different name. So far he has been knodoctor, thor petersen, and now peter nixon. Just an FYI.

Not too much can go wrong. It's the simplest drivetrain out there. It received the highest rating for safety it can get. Actually it's safety rating is higher but they don't rate any higher. What I think you wanted to say was: I'm hoping there is a recall soon so I can feel better about myself and my accomplishments, which are close to non-existent.

That would be a warranty issue. Similar to your gas engine suddenly throwing a rod at 5000 miles. Recalls happen because there is a fundamental flaw. The motor has exactly one moving part. It should last over 500,000 miles easy. The battery pack has a minimum of an 8 year warranty.

You are assuming recalls related to safety. I think the much bigger concern are recalls due to other issues like battery failure.

I see my definition of "invention" must be way off.

Instead of whining like a typical armchair critic, why don't you go out and engineer a better car. Highly unlikely I bet. ;)

Yep. And if you put a larger gas tank into regular Ford Focus then you'd also blow away a BMW M5 just like the Model S did. That is pretty much what you just did in your comparison. A larger battery pack does give the car more range but there is a lot more to it than just that. 0-60 in 4 seconds. That blows away the FFE or any other mass produced EV. The battery pack design puts the weight lower than just about every car made. That makes the handling spectacular. The list goes on...

So your saying if I put 10k more over the price is cost me to buy an Electric Focus I can have a Tesla? Sign me up.

The most important car since the Ford Model T is not the Tesla Model S. It's the Volkswagen Beetle. Once the Model S can be produced in the millions, driven by people around the world, and remain an icon after decades, then it can be compared to cars like the Model T and VW Beetle. It has yet to even prove itself other than to give boners to auto journalists.

peter nixon is a troll. He's been kicked off lots of times and he constantly comes back under other names. Last time he was knodoctor and before that he was thor petersen. He is a crazy person. He will not listen to any advice nor stop his bad behavior. It will get continually worse until he is kicked off again.

GR. I get your point and I think it is a reasonable one. You're having a problem with the comparisons and wording. It all depends on the criteria you're using to make those comparisons and you simply disagree with the ones others are using. You're entitled to your opinion and you've made good arguments for why you disagree. I'm sorry that the troll agreed with you.

Grendal, Troll or not, I don't care who agrees with me. I am simply in strong opposition to the position that this Tesla is a revolutionary cars comparable to the Ford Model T or even the VW Beetle. It has yet to prove itself. It can't even try to compete until about 10 years for its impact to be determined. As of now, everything is speculation and hype with this car. I am not one for hype, especially when this EV is not a new invention nor affordable for the masses. About affordability: They keep giving 50k figures, but all the cars tested and awarded are the 100k models. Pay close attention to this and you will notice it. This is very deceptive given the car talked about vs. the car tested have a price difference of nearly 100%. In practical terms, that is like an entirely different car. This tactic is called a bait and switch.

It would make a great second car for close to home use. The sad fact is that it is not practical for even medium distance 1 day trips. Keep in mind that if you are enjoying the performance your range will be substantially decreased. Only an idiot would buy one. The other thing; What is the invention?

I didn't know Tesla invented the car, or the electric car....and this system is just an upgraded system used in the roadster.......so nothing was inventioned here just revolutionized.....with saying that testla model S should win every COTY it is entered in because it is just that damn good.....leave the invention award for...well real invention

It's the benchmark that even the longest running EV's will be held to. If other companies try to compete with this car, we will all win. Well, except for price.
