Automobile Magazine recently spent the better part of three days getting to know 28 of the latest and greatest cars on the market to pick its Automobile of the Year, and today it announced that the 2012 Tesla Model S was given this coveted award. As much as the all-electric Model S means to the automotive world, we'd be surprised if it doesn't snag a lot more hardware in the next few months.

The Model S beat out cars like the 2013 Cadillac ATS, 2013 Ford Fusion, 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 2013 BMW M5 with its sleek design, luxurious and tech-filled interior and, of course, its unique electric powertrain that offers both an incredible all-electric range and equally eye-popping performance.

To narrow down the top candidates for the award, Automobile took all the cars out for two days of road testing and then spent another day at Gingerman Raceway in Western Michigan, and the performance aspect of the Model S seemed to surprise and/or impress a lot of the magazine's staff more than anything else. To prove how fast the car is, they did a drag race to 100 miles per hour with the Tesla and the new M5, and the Model S won. The 265-mile driving range and 17-inch touch-screen display won points for the car, too.

Scroll down for a quick video from Automobile that goes into detail why its staff chose the Model S, and shows some great driving shots of the car as well. We've also put together a gallery with the Model S and the nine other cars that made the short list for the award, so be sure to check them out below.

Hey everyone, I have a suggestion. Let's not reply to any posts made by knodoctor (or laser or whatever his handle is). Vote him down, but don't reply at all. If we ignore him completely, he might go away.

Treat him like the retarded impotent monster wannabe he acts like. Poisonous and pointed hatred are called for. After all, it is trying to ruin the whole world.

Now, before anyone complains about the price, availability or any of that crap...let's go back to 2008 when the GT-R won despite it not being available for purchase. http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/11/nissan-gt-r-named-car-of-the-year-by-automobile-mag/

Well . . . this is going to be a 300+ comment topic! :-) Congrats Tesla. It is a beautiful car with great specs. Now build a bunch of them, sell them, and make some money. And start trying to figure out how to build them for less money so you can expand your market.

It looks like the troll knodoctor/thor petersen has been kicked off again. I wonder how soon he will be back to torment us some more. My bet is he comes back on this thread with a new alias. Let's enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts. Congratulations, Tesla. Now get back to work, you've got 13,000 customers waiting on their car and you'll be selling a lot more because of winning this award.

Judging from all the reviews I've read, this is a well deserved award for Tesla. As the guy said in the video, the big question is will Tesla be around in the future.

Tesla has a fantastic product and their biggest problem is they just cant build the damn thing fast enough. Thats one of those good problems to have. I look forward to see these thing start pouring out of the factory.

Generally it is a good thing, but Tesla needs to generate profits so getting cars out the door is critical.

Congratulations to Tesla ! Car of the Year awards should be given to vehicles which are both inspirational and aspirational. Tesla represents and important milestone in the development of the Automobile. Automobiles (or even older cars) are not exclusively welded to the internal combustion engine. The means of propulsion, is just one part of an automobile. To become a classic, (as cars of the year, should all become) requires a balance between advanced technology, function, engineering, design, and art. The final touch should be an element of controversy, excitement and achievement. Elon Musk's Tesla Model S, has all those attributes, and more. A truly well deserved win !

Congrats, Tesla and all the engineers and investors for making this car possible, and rich people for having the money and brains to buy this car. Elon Musk, you are my favorite person alive today and not just because of Tesla.

If you put a few million dollars and thousands of hours into making the best car you and your cohorts can possibly imagine, other car enthusiasts will thank you for it. (Whether or not you can scale up to challenge the 65-year old multi-billion dollar entrenched incumbents in a hostile oligopolistic market.) Thank you, Elon! Customers will demand to see in others what you have proved is possible.
