At some point, someone is going to have to hand the minds at Bugatti a physics book and tell them to settle down. Automobile reports the monarch of the Volkswagen stable is out to eclipse its own ludicrous performance threshold by building a new Super Veyron capable of snapping to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds. How? The company plans to shove even more carbon fiber at the ultracar while also turning up the horsepower. Rumor has it the machine will boast either an 8.0- or 9.6-liter W16 engine good for 1,600 horsepower, which should be enough to nudge the vehicle's top end from 259 mph all the way to 288 mph.

All told, the Über Veyron will hold a 550-pound advantage over its predecessor for a power to weight ratio of 2.2 lb/hp. How much will one of these things cost you? Expect to pony up $2.5 million for the privilege of ownership. That is, if it makes it to production.

Kind of ridiculous and yet I kind of want to see it done.

as Napoleon once said: impossible is only a word that exists in the dictionary of fools. during the 80's and 90's you needed V12 engines to accelerate from 0-60 in 4 seconds. today the Nissan GTR can sprint from 0-60 in 3 seconds flat with only V6 engine.

When going fast just isn't fast enough. I applaud these engineers for not simply sitting on their hands and continuing to dare to push the envelope. If only the FIA would see the light and open up the rulebooks to allow for greater imagination and innovation in racing. The Deltawing is a start but we need so much more.

      How about 12L WV24 with 6 turbos? 3000HP? Maybe in 10 years.

That thing will need SUPER soft compound tires to provide that kind of accelerative force to the ground, and such a compound would wear too quickly to get 288 mph, surely. 3500lb and 1600hp is just so ridiculously crazy considering that a "regular" Veyron has 4400lb pushed by 1000hp and the SuperSport has 4100lb and 1200hp. And what kind of sadistic motherfu**er feels that 0-60 in 2.4 seconds isn't enough punishment for their internal organs? I applaud Bugatti for deciding that they should demolish their own records.

Can anyone tell me the scientific limits in regards to traction and actually converting that power to movement?

The Veyron is honestly an embarassing project, marginally safer than the idiot who puts a bunch of turbos and a parachute in their car. It doesn't have the suspension, breaks, tires (neither for maneuvering or even HANDLING its top speed), fuel tank, cabin safety for the speed it has. Driving at 400 km/h in a Bugatti is hardly safer than driving at that speed in any other ridiculous car. Instead of trying to set the next record 0-60mph time, they should maybe focus on making the car more useable. That's what's so spectacular about a Ferrari, and so stupid about a Lamborghini. That's what's so awesome about a BMW, and so ridiculous about a Mercedes or an Audi.

For all you idiots, what I mean is that when a serious car company does a project, they try to make sure the car can actually handle the speed it can move at. In a BMW, when you're at 150mph, you have a full project of cabin protection, balance, stability, breaks, that are designed so you can have a minimum of safety. In a Ferrari, they look for that as well, instead of Lambos, where all they do is join power and weird looks. A Bugatti can go 400 km/h. That's great, but your tires run out in 15', and you run out of gas in 12'. So in reality, at 400 km/h, you can drive 80 km (50mi). Of course, if you refuel and decide to go again, you have 3' on your tires (or 20km, or 15mi). And of course, if there is any bump in the road, you don't even have time to notice it, and boom you're history. Do you honestly think BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. can't make a ridiculously fast car? Of course they can, but if they're going to do it, they'll need to make it driveable. What's the point of driving 50mi at 400 km/h? Great, you can go from Miami to Palm Beach. And then you need to change the tires.

Why would I value any opinion you have when you call the devices that slow/stop automobiles "breaks" repeatedly?

You missed the point. The idea is not to sustain that speed for an extened amount of time. Extreamly few tracks, let alone a public road, can handle the a top speed run of this thing. This was nothing more then an excerise in what can be done., pushing the limit. You know why? Cause that what we humans do. Also, when Capt. Slow drove the Veyron to the limit, he did comment on how surprisingly stable and quiet.

Have you been in any of the cars you are talking about? The Bugatti is easily the most comfortable to drive at speed. At 150mph, all of them are very drivable and offer a minimum of safety and a full project of cabin protection (whatever that means). The BMW, Ferrari, the Bugatti, and yes the Lambo; Lamborghini is about the whole package now, not just a temperamental super car that tries to kill you. They could make a car as fast as the Bugatti, but they would run into the same problems with gas and tires. Do you think that Ferrari/BMW/Lamborghini would magically come up with a magical tire compound that wouldn't wear out in 15 minutes at 400km/h? Don't you think with all the R&D Bugatti did and the bankroll from VW Auto Group, that the rubber on a Bugatti is as good as it gets for now? Why it matter that gas and tires only last that long, your not gonna drive at 400km/h on the road? So you should be an equal opportunity asshat and make fun of the BMW, Ferrari and Lamborghini then. Those cars aren't gonna hit top speed on the way from Miami to Palm Beach either.

Nothing about you comment makes any sense. You are hating on bugatti for not being safe enough at 400km/h, man you are an idiot, 99.9% of the time if any motorized vehicle crashes at 400km/h the occupants are dead PERIOD. The bugatti is really stable at high speed hence its 4300 pound weight which is 1000 pounds heavier than most other super cars . Also apart from the FF how is a ferrari more useful than a lambo????? If anything a lambo is way for useable because of its all wheel drive. I'm not even going to respond about BMW's being more useful than audi and mercedes because that is also another stupid statement.

What the hell are you talking about? The Veyron SS was the fastest car around the Top Gear track for a while, by a wide margin, it's still second fastest to this day. No handling or brakes? Have you ever even seen one? Read a single review of one? What are you talking about. Get out of here troll. Holy hell where do this people come from.

Could we get some legislation to get these stupid power freaks off the road and on the racetrack???!!! How many Youtube videos have you seen of a street racing supercar crashing into an innocent motorist and/or bursting into flames???? This is madness.

How many? Many many many (many?) less than non-supercar driving idiots crashing into innocent motorists. You are the kind of person that wants laws to regulate the 1% of a problem, while ignoring the 99% because you happen to fall in that bracket.

If you're buying a Bugatti, you're probably not too worried about cost. Not to mention, cars are safer in crashes. For the performance gain you get with two wheels, it's not worth the drop in safety you get, in my opinion.
