Are we too fat to ever save fuel?

That's a question that's come up again, after AOL Autos looked into the issue in 2011, now that Allstate Insurance and Cars.com paired up to put together a pretty nifty graphic showing the rise in obesity and how it compares with the automaker's efforts to make more fuel efficient cars.

To sum it all up, our penchant for bacon sundaes is not helping the world become a better place, at least when it comes to our cars.

While the automakers are trying to make cars lighter, using aluminum instead of steel, replacing spare tires with air pumps, and changing paper manuals for DVDs, the average weight of Americans inside the cars keeps going up.

"It's a seesaw battle that's making it difficult to realize the gains expected by a push for lighter, more fuel efficient cars," Allstate said in its blog.

The amount of gas wasted by the U.S. obesity epidemic costs us 1 billion gallons of gas annually, according to a study done by Entrepreneur Magazine.

AOL Autos found that bigger drivers say they don't like owning smaller cars. Some folks say they feel cramped and uncomfortable in smaller cars, so they opt for bigger cars like SUVs and minivans, which adds to the overall problem.

See below for the Allstate graphic:

We're not short of oil. We're just short of the will to drill..!

Want to save fuel? Heres an easier way. Stop hammering the gas then getting on the binders because you don't look far enough ahead to read the traffic flow. Stop drag racing people to the off ramp. Nice and easy throttle control roll into and out of it instead of hammering it on and off. Smooth steady speed on the freeway it doesn't matter if you are doing 60-75 just be smooth. Buy a car with an engine that gives the performence you need those tiny Hybrid engines are designed for slow smooth acceleration and moderate cruise speed for max milage. Driving one like a Camaro negates any real advantage over the gas only model. Seriously I get a good laugh at the "greenies" in thier Hybrid whipping by my Blazer doing over 90 when I am cruising at 70 and getting 30 mpg bet they aren't getting much better winding that tiny motor out. If they were matching my speed then I bet they would see the milage climb by a huge percent. Keep your tires inflated to the max rating for them. Never mind the car sticker thats for ride comfort mostly if you are shy of doing that run them at the max pressure on vehicle data plate. Keep everything lined up and fluids at full level.

Yeah I think so. A 466 lb co-worker (female, 5 feet tall, real nice lady ) drives a Smart Car and she complains that she can only get 15 mpg. She thought she'd get 50 mpg, especially when she had the 2nd seat removed to better fit her bod. We help her get out of the car when she rolls into work and every time she's cussing about the fuel mileage as she chomps down on her 2 Carl's Jr sausage biscuit daily breakfast.

I was on a commuter flight and the woman next to me took up her seat and a quarter of mine. There was a fat farm in the Fort Walton Beach area. One of the flights out could not take off because of the weight. None of the passengers would change flights. They were indignant that the plane could not lift off. All luggage had to be removed and put on another plane in order to make the flight.

Small cars are great for people who dont have to work . When is the last time you tried to pull a WORK trailer with your PRIUS . It wont work . I think anyone whom has to use a truck for business should be given a tax break for the cost of fuel , and anyone whom drive a prius type vehicle should be taxed when they buy the vehicle , thus offsetting the tax break for the working people . Economy is great , but some of us have to work !!!!!

Because everyone who has a job must be pulling trailers, I'm sure. That's the ONLY type of job available, ever.

I understand what you are saying. I didn't have to pull a trailer but my vehicle was pretty much my office in my line of work. I needed the room for the equipment and for clients. At one time there was a tax break for vehicles weighing over a certain amount but I don't know if that is still available or not.

My favorite is a nice fat porker in a huge SUV talking on the phone. How can fat people fit is a small car? I guess a can of Crisco would help. Not to eat but to put on their fat a$$ to slide in.

President Obama should tax fat people. They are wasting fuel, over crowding airplanes and if it was not for fat people farmers would not need head lights on their tractors. Fat people are a burden on our fuel and food supplies. They are physically unfit to serve in the military but want to live under the umbrella of freedon provided by the military. Fat people are anti-American.

You had better hope that he doesn't tax arrogant, effetist, ignorant imbeciles. Because, after paying the tax himself, he will snatch the granola bar right out of your hand, and make you a poor, stupid, little excuse for a person. Where do they grow freaks like you?

Also smokers like Obama should not be allowed inside America because it polutes our air

Sorry to offend you. I did serve in the Military unlike you and top the scale at 245 and bench 400 easily guess all the muscle I put on carrying 150 lbs of gear in Iraq makes me fat in your book twig boy. Burden to society? How much do you make a year twig boy? Minimum I bet. Guess you have no clue about farming our biggest cash export is food sold all over the world. We are the biggest grain producer ,beef , chicken, fish producing and exporting nation on earth. It isn't our population that eating all th food we produce. In fact roughly half of all farmland here is fallow meaning its not growing crops. First reason for this is to preserve the soil you rotate crops, Second to keep prices stable for farmers who make jack **** on the crops. But I guess you never left the city twig boy and went to places like Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. But he why not bring your ideas into effect it would be Nazi Germany all over again.

Thank you! I am from a fat family and none of us have ever been a burden to society. Some of us farm, some of us own other businesses and like you, a number of my relatives have served in the military. I think Wdcarter probably still lives in his mom's basement but at least he is skinny.

Swapping spare tires for air pumps is a very bad idea! How do you pump up a tire that is damaged too badly to hold air? Run flat tires sounds like a better way to go.

        @Jim
Run flat tires are very expensive. I had them on my minivan, and each time one got damaged I had to spend $280 to replace it. After a few replacements I had enough and opted for regular tires that come with a free repair guarantee by the store I got them from. The only drawback is that my van doesn't come with a spare, but that's where a AAA membership comes in handy.

Ever sat between two fat ones in an airliner? They suffocate in their own meat, sweat and grunt while you are squeezed with wet hot weight. Not a particularly sexy situation. We can take the tack that their overweight is physically, and aesthetically offensive. But then we become intolerant, racist and politically incorrect. So go, join them, eat and get fat. By the way, our beloved Leader is still skinny and we still worship Him?
