The Earl of March, the man responsible for the Goodwood Revival, said he's been trying to get all of the Silver Arrows race cars – those of Auto Union, now Audi Tradition, and Mercedes-Benz – to the event for 20 years. This year, the stars aligned. 2012 marked the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows arriving in the UK, and there have never been as many of the instantly recognizable winners in one place at the same time. Ten of them, to be specific.

They weren't just there to sit in "the box," either, with drivers like Jackie Stewart, Jochen Mass and Karl Wendlinger throwing them around the Goodwood Circuit. For all of their Wagnerian pre-war thunder,at least one of them was apparently kinder than it sounded: Mass compared the handling of the Mercedes W25, with its over 400-horsepower 4.3-liter inline eight-cylinder, to a Volkswagen Beetle.

The Silver Arrows campaigns were funded quite overtly by Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. He demanded German success on the racetracks of Europe and his equally ambitious friends at Benz & Auto Union complied by creating the most technically progressive and stunning racing cars seen to that time. Benz & Auto Union happily took the budgets from the Nazis to chase glory. They were willing pawns in the propaganda that flowed from track triumphs...

The Silver Arrows are the perfect example of engineering design innovation excellence, when almost limitless funding and a clear purpose provides a focus for results. As the Silver Arrows were pushed out of their specially recreated pits into full public view, at last weeks Goodwood Revival, gasps and silence ensued. When their engines where started by mobile electric starter motors, the truly extraordinary sonorous sound confirmed these cars as uniquely placed to dominate. That these machines create the same emotive response almost 78 years after their first viewing confirms how timeless they are. The totalitarian nazi fascist slant must be remembered for all that it's inhumanity imbued, and the Silver Arrows represent a tangible example of this albeit on the race track. I was present at this event and as a media professional photographed the Arrows and team throughout the event.

Don't know why but when I saw the title I though this was about Pierce Silver Arrows.
