The types of pure electric vehicles available on the market are quite limited. For now, we've got compact and midsize cars and high performance sports cars. More are coming, but that's it today unless you want to get a conversion. What if you were looking for an official, electric SUV or a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) to transport your family, groceries, and camping gear?

Nissan is getting ready to fill that niche and will be unveiling an all-electric compact SUV concept at this year's Paris Motor Show in late September. Details are limited, but we hear that this unnamed EV, possibly an X-Trail replacement, could be an evolution of the Hi-Cross hybrid concept that was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show this year (pictured). As for power, it might use the powerful 80-kilowatt motor found in the Nissan Leaf. Beyond that, who knows.

There will be competition in this new EV segment. Toyota recently unveiled the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV, a CUV destined for limited production later this year. Tesla will also bring out a crossover compact luxury CUV, the Model X, in late 2013. Mitsubishi plans to roll out its second electrified vehicle in the near future – a plug-in hybrid SUV. Looks like any complaints about the lack of electric SUVs/CUVs on dealer lots will only hold water for a short while.

What the heck with is with that massive nose? That had better be a massive frunk. The batteries should be in the bottom/center for protection and low-center-of-gravity. The motor, controller, AC, and the rest should not be very big.

That's a picture of the plug in hybrid concept that they previously showed, not the BEV concept.

Tesla's model X is coming soon and it is much better than anything from Nissan. Nissan's Johnny-come-lately is a fraud, a 'me-too' concoction that is so typical of Nissan's lack of leadership.

The Hi-Cross concept led to the next Qashqai design (to be sold as the Rogue in the US). http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/35585/next-nissan-qashqai Nissan dominates the crossover segment in Europe and the Qashqai is their top selling vehicle there. So it makes sense that they would introduce an EV version in Europe. Maybe we could get a Rogue EV from the new US production.

I'm not sure where the notion that this is definitely production bound comes from. Not, it seems, from Nissan: 'According to Jeff Fisher, Nissan Australia’s General Manager of Media Enquirers, at next month’s Paris auto show, Nissan will show a battery-electric SUV concept. “At Paris,” Fisher said to motoring.co.au, that Nissan will “have an SUV concept, with zero emissions; so an electric SUV concept vehicle.” Fisher went on to explain that there is no definitive model that this EV SUV falls under, however hinted out a concept car and a currently manufactured vehicle with much skepticism. “[Hi-Cross] was a compact SUV concept; X-TRAIL is a compact SUV so you can draw your own conclusions.”' http://insideevs.com/nissan-to-show-electric-suv-concept-at-paris-car-show/

Concept? It looks production ready to me.
