Mike Stielow is known for taking classic Chevy Camaro coupes and bending them into machines that not only kick ass in a straight line, but that can actually outhandle modern sports cars around a road course, too. His pro touring creations are nothing short of legendary, and as a suspension engineer for General Motors, if anyone knows how to wring more performance out of a Bowtie, it's Stielow.

His latest project, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro lovingly dubbed "Red Devil," is the eleventh '69 he's built in the past 23 years. It boasts a 7.0-liter block from a Corvette Z06 topped with the heads, valvetrain and supercharger from the Corvette ZR1. An Eaton TVS blower shoves 12 psi into each combustion chamber, helping to generate 756 horsepower. The grunt is dumped to the rear wheels via Tremec six-speed.

Big numbers, but are they enough to help the Red Devil top its progeny, the Camaro ZL1? The guys at Hot Rod magazine decided to find out by pitting the cars against each other at Michigan's GingerMan Raceway. We won't spoil the results here, but we will say Stielow believes he laid down the quickest lap time at GingerMan for any new ZL1, even besting the efforts Automobile Magazine and their pro driver.       Just finished reading a car and driver article about the Red Devil and I quote: "Stielow has no intention of selling Red Devil. If you want a clone, he’ll refer you to his allies Kyle and Stacy Tucker at Detroit Speed. Their estimated cost? $250,000." I'm all for the 69 Camaro I think it's a beautiful car, but if you want to drive on a race track there are some serious machines you can build or buy for that price. You would have to really REALLY love vintage muscle to fork that cash over for this car. If you invested that kind of money into a ZL1 there is zero question in my mind it would eat the 69 alive on the track. Price of a ZL1: $58,000 Given the choice between modern and vintage and a savings of $192,000 I would take the ZL1 and modify the hell out of it if I wanted to go that route. Still though, that 69 is pretty cool for a car that is 43 years old.

        To the average consumer the dollars that go into a car are hugely important. Maybe not to the ultra rich, but I think most of the guys who are into Camaros are not ultra rich gazillionaires. How much went into engineering the ZL1 isn't really relevant to a consumer. What matters is what they pay out the door for a car.

      Why can't the new Camaro (and Mustang, Challenger, etc) be as svelte and well proportioned as their late 60's/early 70's ancestors? The new ZL1 is a marvel, does it need to be so blocky and slab sided, relying upon comically narrow greenhouse to look cool? Seeing that the 1969 one has all of the new age goodies and firepower you actually need thanks to Stielow, I'd take the Red Devil in a heartbeat.

        I've wondered this myself. I assume it has to do with safety and crash testing regulations. Old muscle cars really look more lean and...well...muscular, and it's not like they were small to begin with....

          I agree with you guys and I think it's because of safety regulations. Think about all the crush zones etc they have to fit in cars now. I'm not really into muscle cars but God I love the old 69 Camaros and GTOs. Having said that, I do think they did a good job with the new Camaro. I really do. It looks very good for a modern update. Much better than the Mustangs in my opinion and a LOT better than the Charger / Challenger updates.

      Fun to watch video and both cars are totally sick, but I have to protest how this is called a '69. For all intense and purposes, it looks like that car is about as brand new as the '12 ZL1 seeing as how it uses modern engine, tranny and some suspension bits. To the casual observer, they might actually think that any stock '69 could come anywhere close to a modern ZL1 and that's just not gonna happen. Love both cars though, and I do hope that they test out 2 Corvettes like the guy on the video suggested.

      The '69 is badass...but at what price? That car only makes sense if you can competently build one yourself.(or you're crazy rich) Nah...I still take the ZL1. It's the "creature comforts" thing.Sue me.
