Let's just go ahead and say it: a sports car is not really, truly a sports car until it has set a time on the Nürburgring. Until then, it's just seats on wheels. The Mini John Cooper Works GP edition has, however, earned its car stripes: just 2,000 of the fancy Minis are headed for production, and one of them has lapped the 'Ring in 8:23.

According to Wikipedia, that puts it one second ahead of the Cosworth Type 25 STI Spec C, and even further forward of the Lotus Exige S, Jaguar XKR and Audi RS4. The other side is just as noteworthy, with the Mini JCW GP making a close inspection of the tailpipes on the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG, BMW M3 E46, BMW M Coupe and Chevrolet Cobalt SS, all of which scored the very popular time of 8:22. The caveat here is that none of of those other cars, before or after, was tested after 2010, most of them having been run in the early years of this millennium or the end of the last.

Not that the clock cares – 8:23 is still 8:23. You can watch the lap below, but since the video has the frenzied, upbeat editing of a Mini commercial, don't expect to see much of it.

I was surprised that it beat the XKR, but if thats an early model then it makes sense. The new XKR has a lot more power behind it now, I wonder how fast it could lap now.

Nice try MINI! Or should we say BMW? Considering both brands have about the same toilet long term durability. Hope you've fixed the Jekyl and Hyde overboost function, its anyones guess when it will and won't work. Can't wait to see how fast you dissapear in the rearview when everyone else runs on the fresh track! LOL

... This thing has less than 220 hp. Not as fast as an EVO or an STI?!?!?! Heaven's no, what a POS.

Funny thing about comparing the car's laptime to those of cars that ran the ring ~10 years ago doesn't take into account that the Nord was repaved during that time and is not much smoother than before.

Er, what? According to the very same Wikipedia page, the RS4 did it in 8:09. 8:23 is not particularly impressive for a hot hatch, when the Renault Megane RS Trophy (itself a FWD hot hatch) did it in 8:07.
