The 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid will offer the lowest sticker price out of any plug-in vehicle in the U.S. market when it arrives later this year.

The Energi, which will have a 20-mile range on electric power only before switching to a traditional gas-electric hybrid powertrain, will have a starting price of $29,995 after applying a federal tax credit.

The U.S. government has been attempting to incentivize green vehicle sales by providing tax credits of up to $7,500 depending on the vehicle's battery size. The C-MAX Energi qualifies for $3,750 in credits. It will qualify for an additional $1,500 credit from the state of California if bought there.

"It offers exceptional fuel economy, better features and a better price tag than a Prius plug-in hybrid, which we think will help make C-MAX Energi one of our most attractive vehicles for import customers," said Michael O'Brien, Ford electrified vehicle marketing manager.

However, the C-MAX Energi undercuts the Prius plug-in hybrid by just $265. According to Toyota, the Prius plug-in hybrid will has a starting price of $32,760 and it qualifies for $2,500 in tax credits.

While the price difference is only a few hundred dollars, the C-MAX Energi should be able to stand on its own merits as well. The five-passenger vehicle has a total range of 550 miles, while delivering 188 horsepower between its electric motor and gasoline engine.

As the vehicle gets closer to hitting dealerships, Ford will continue to release more details about it. And if you're interested in building your own C-MAX plug-in or regular hybrid, Ford launched a configurator website that you can visit by clicking here.
