A potentially defective turbine wheel in the turbochargers of 2011 and 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models and the 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has led to a recall. There are 270 units affected among the three models, with a casting defect being cited as the cause of the trouble. The issue could lead to a fracture in the turbocharger itself, which could then lead to follow-on problems, smoke and risk of fire.

Porsche is notifying owners this month, after whcih they can take their cars to their dealers for repair free of charge. A complete notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is below.

Any Porsche flat 6 non-Mezger engine from the late 90s until the update in 2009 has questionable reliability and several common failure modes. Porsche is just good at keeping it quiet. The M96/M97 engines especially in Cayman/Boxster applications have high failure rates due to improper or insufficient placement of oil scavenge pumps, cylinder "D" chunk, IMS, etc.

No recalls to replace the defectively ugly body shell?

Only 270 recalled out of all models big deal.

Too bad, Porsche usually gets top marks for reliability. Here's hoping it doesn't affect too many customers. Also, the second paragraph has a typo -- "whcih" -- that could be easily remedied. Not hating! As a journalist, I make plenty of typos myself.

As much as I like to think they are still great (and they are still up there in reliability), the over engineered, bullet-proof Porsches are a thing of the past. There is no way this would've happened to an 80's 911. Something tells me we won't be seeing as many of these newer Porsches in 30 years.

An 80s 911 was a smoking pile of electrical shorts........give me a break.

Oh please. 270 units are effected. They are still some of the best built and most reliable sports cars in the world, no matter what survey you check. Especially when comparing them to cars from the 80s era. What are you smoking?

For a part that spins at those very high revs are they X-raying them all ? If so what happened ?Assembled before checking X-rays ?
