Toyota is facing further fallout from its recent unintended acceleration debacle, with Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reopen its investigation into the situation that led Toyota to recall some eight million vehicles. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, Grassley has written a letter to NHTSA director David Strickland, stating in part, "Key questions about the cause of unintended acceleration remain unanswered."

Grassley's contention is that because neither of the two independent investigations into the issue produced a definitive cause or explanation, further digging is necessary. Most of the unintended acceleration incidents in the NASA and National Academy of Sciences reports not attributed to trapped floormats or other problems with accelerator pedals were blamed on driver error, according to the report, but both studies concluded that other unknown issues could be at play.

According to Automotive News, Grassley is particularly concerned about the "tin whiskers" phenomenon, in which tiny threads of conductive crystal can grow on circuit boards.

Toyota has responded to the Grassley letter, issuing a statement that reads, in part, "There is no problem with the electronic throttle control systems in Toyota vehicles – and all the scientific evidence confirms it. So-called 'tin whiskers' are not a new phenomenon and do not represent a mysterious or undetectable problem in a vehicle's electronics."

How do I contact Sen. Grassley with information on recent problems with Toyota. My daughter was parking when her car surged forward intot a wall. Toyota says there is nothing wrong with the car,but I would like him to see the results of the tests they did.. My daughter is a retired AF officer who worked for Space Command, she is not a teenager

you are sooo korrekt kontroll...they are sleeping now, ready for another round later in the day (american time)well there is something to say about these toyotapeople :they are ready to go to war to defend their lame purchase or products whichever the case may be. Very primitive and brainless when people get so PERSONAL and defensive about objects; it's like you are insulting them personally

Much like you just did numerous times? I wonder how many times your parents had to defend their lame decision on giving birth to you. You people come on here first and start this $hit and then are so offended when others come here and defend their brand. I personally think Fords are lame but it’s my opinion. Just like your opinion about Toyota. So do us a favor, don’t post here if you get offended. If you and the other domestic fans wouldn’t come here and bash us we wouldn’t bash you. Funny thing is when NHTSA and Autoblog posted several recalls and investigations into American cars or safety advocates were accusing Ford of not fixing their cruise control issues after the nearly 15 million were recalled you didn’t see us on those forums bashing you. But for some reason you feel obligated to come on here and talk $hit. I mean the Ford Escape was recalled and damage was done resulting in a young girl being killed. But the comments were few a far between. Now if that were Toyota all the domestic fans with their multiple screen names would be foaming at the mouth for an opportunity to bash, criticize and personally attack us. But considering you agree with anything from kontroll just shows your level of intelligence. Good day.

When is Congress going to apologize to Akio Toyoda for calling him in and, among other idiocies and outrages, demanding he pay for people's funeral expenses?

Grassly should probably go ahead and open up the case against Audi from the 80's again too. I mean if we are opening up old cases of people not being able to drive and blaming it on a foreign automaker's...

How about the Explorers and their Firestone tires? Now there was a fiasco of almost comic proportions, but it was not comic because there were some tragic accidents.

Can we please let this 'story' die? UA is and always has been bullshit. It was BS when 60 Minutes tried to frame Audi for it back in the 80s, and its BS now.

What's not BS is the ignorance of the driving public, those who cause the problem through operator error and are unable to save themselves from it.

All the TRDyota leghumpers tried to blame Obama and GM , now what's their excuse when a top Republican goes after the evil empire for not having throttle overrides?

I have two throttle over rides in my manual transmission Toyota Tacoma. One is called the clutch pedal and the other one is called my brain. I use them both pretty often and it seems to be working out just fine without government regulations thank you.

Max, not only are you an idiot you’re a scumbag, a liar and racist. Akio is a great person and a CEO who truly cares. What Grassley should be worried about is the 5.9 million jeeps that can burst into flames when in an accident. Or, why a brand new Chrysler 200 is stalling at stoplights. You know Max, you don't have to lie. We all know you are bill from buckhead. You both refer to Japan as Japanic, you both make racist remarks about Japanese people, you both refer to Toyota fans as TRDyota, and you both have a unhealthy obsession with crapler (chrysler) products. The secret is out we know who are you scumbag troll. BTW moron, Toyota implemented brake override in all 2011 models. http://www.leftlanenews.com/toyota-to-implement-brake-override-in-all-2011-models.html
