Numbers don't lie. But they don't always tell the whole story, either. That's one reason why we've been so interested in the rivalry between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro over the last several decades. The two cars have been swapping performance and sales-floor bragging rights since Chevy slapped its Bowtie on its Pony-fighter in 1967, and the faster model hasn't always been the better seller.

That said, when it comes to the stoplight-to-stoplight drag race of the internet, nothing but good hard facts are going to earn you any respect. This being the case, the latest Ford Shelby GT500 has been King of the Road ever since it was unveiled as a 2013 model. With 82 more horsepower (rated) and a couple hundred pounds less weight to move, the 'Stang out to outrun the range-topping 2012 Camaro ZL1 in straight-line performance testing.

Of course, the world doesn't always operate in straight lines, meaning there's a whole lot more to this story left to unfold. The boys from Inside Line decided to round up the latest GT500 and Camaro ZL1 models to see which would come out on top in a series of head-to-head contests. The games begin in the video below and the rest of the story can be found here.

nice to see them talk about our cars in a positive way for a chnge and not some imported overpriced crap.

We're actually looking at two cars which don't fail at anything, really. I guess the ZL1 is more refined - thus the better handling - the Ford is just more brute power for straight lines and simpler built. Both cars address the right public. In my opinion the ZL1 is better engineered, more refined.

Interesting. The two cars are a half-second apart in the quarter, but four-tenths of that difference is between 0-60. That Camaro must have some pretty deep gears to keep pace in the 60-120ish range ...

The 1/4 Mile run done by the GT500 was pretty slow, it's capable of mid 11s and a 0-60 of 3.5 seconds.

Its slower than the MT run, but its the same driver on the same track, ran at the same time. Any environmental or driver issues would also negatively impact the ZL1 as well. This 11.9 run is a valid test. C&D was only just a hair slower at 11.8, so the IL test isn't too far off base here. As I see more results from various mags, none of which can match that MT time, I'm beginning to wonder if that 11.5 was just an outlier hero run.

@ ngiotta I don't know what planet you've been living in but it hasn't been Earth because here The Camaro / F-body has been the most Aerodynamic car next to a ferrari it can never be outhandled by a mustang, The F-body always corners better than mustangs. Sad But True for Blue Oval people.

Acceleration: GT500 Braking: GT500 Top Speed: GT500 Handling: ZL1 Traction: ZL1 As far as right now we have no idea how these two will compete on a actual track so calling a winner like that is pretty damn ignorant.

I like to roll up at a light on my 2000 unrestricted, stretched Hayabusa, that is Brocked out, flip my helmet shield up and ask how does it feel to have the SECOND fastest thing sitting here. And unless they can beat a 9.19@ 153.00 they STFU. LOL

no one cares. Not too many people cross shop a 12 year old modified bike vs a new muscle car. but congratulations on that "Irrelevant comment of the year award."

@ karmarind: you're so pathetic that words cannot describe it. All your Hayabusa can do is a straight line while you hop on the damm thing in flip flops and wife beater. Also, I am surprised you wear a helmet.

Gay bike for riders with little penis' and even smaller brains. The Hayabusa is just a fat overweight bike with a LOT of HP. It has ZERO handling capabilities. Recent track day some douche tried to bring one out and was getting spanked by a Ninja 500. Not even a ZX6R. For those that don't know bikes, it's like getting beat by a V6 base mustang. I'd love for it to start to drizzle.. then ask who has the fastest thing here :)

They don't have to to beat a 9.19. They just have to wait for that small imperfection in the road that will lead to your immediate death. I respect how fast bikes are, however personally you won't ever see me riding one that fast. I'd rather not do something that if something goes wrong, the best case scenario is i'm a vegetable and **** in a bag for the rest of my life.

The results are not surprising at all. All Ford cares about is winning the war on paper. They do that with the F-150 and Super Dooty "trucks" as well. All I have to say is, good for you Ford. You grabbed the headlines, you had the Ford slappies wetting themselves over the paper figures...but, as is true with anything you glue together, they just don't stack up in the real world. For my money though...I would get a real sports car...these cars are just too much money for what you get (not very refined, visability sucks, and the Mustang is simply hideous). I'd get a CTS-V or some sort of AMG Bens, etc. Far more usable everyday...but I gotta tip my hat to GM, they built one hell of a car...and actually thought it out too!

Always seemed like Chevy was the only one ever caring about "winning". Ford was just interested in building the best Mustang they could and they've definitely achieved that with all of the trims across the board.

actually Matt, the only paramater her the chevy trumps the ford is in out and out handling and the limits of both i would say are above and beyond anyone posting here. So in that respect, efficiency, acceleration, top speed mileage, livibility and comfort the Mustang does stand up. me, ill wait till i see some on track experience...that said BOTH are incredible cars performance wise...amazing.

I'd still have the Shelby over the ZL1. Hell, I'd have the 392 over the ZL1 as well. The Camaro is still a fat pig that looks like it was designed by a highschool kid. Yes, the 392 is even fatter and has way less power but it looks sooooo much better.

Agreed 100%. One look at the Camaro and I was kind of sad. It's so ugly. I have owned 2 F-Body cars, and I was so disappointed. So, off to the Dodge dealer I went, and 19 months later, I couldn't really be any happier. The car has had zero problems, and it's only downsides are the endless questions people ask me about it all the time.

HAHAHA. These Ford Fanboys just got their nuts blown off and Knocked Off their Supposed Hi Pedestal when its revealed that the Mighty Camaro ZL1 Leaves The GT500 in the dust when it comes to CORNER AND TURNS which is what Real Life is Like. It's not all straightaways. I love how they are still Butthurt. LMFAO CAMARO FOREVER !!

Corners and turns are real life now cornball?? Your doing that many 120mph hairpins and switchbacks on the way to arcade? Straight line acceleration you know of stop lights, roll ons on the highway, passing on the highway or in traffic is real life you buffoon. What happened to that idiotic prediction by the GM engineers that "based on their calculations" the Zl1 would be faster to 60 than the GT500??

So now that the top of the line Camaro can finally turn left and right a BIT better than the top of the line Mustang, it's suddenly all about cornering. But when the rest of the model lines square off and the Camaro is 0.05 seconds quicker in the 1/4 mile but much worse in handling, it's all about the straightaways and drag racing, as it has always been with pony cars.

Did you even watch the video or look at the numbers? There wasn't one test that the GT500 didn't do quicker the one except through the slalom... do you really think this is a victory? REALLY? So if you'd rather your muscle car be slower and handle like a saloon by all means buy the weaker, more expensive, gas guzzling, but "sedan like" handling Camaro... it looks really cute... in pictures.
