Remember the hotted-up Volvo S60 that's set to take the fight to the BMW M3 with enhancements from Polestar? The Swedish sport sedan we told you about is apparently not nearly as far off as you might think. According to a report from the TTA racing group, Volvo is set to debut its new steroid-enhanced sedan on June 16 at the Gothenburg City Arena race.

According to Polestar Marketing Director Hans Bååth, "The performance concept road-car is a spinoff of our work evaluating and developing the S60 for racing."

Mum's still the word on exactly what lies under the hood of the new Polestar S60. Rumors have suggested either a Yamaha-sourced V8 (a version of the engine that is used in the XC90) or a boosted version of the turbocharged inline-six currently found in the S60. Guess we'll just have to wait until the 16th to find out.

Scroll down to see the Polestar S60 get teased in a video promoting the race in Gothenburg.

I personally would love to see Volvo put together a worthy competitor.

Am I the only one that thinks 'stripper' when hearing 'Polestar'?...or maybe even something else?

I don't think it's just the numbering. The S60 IS supposed to compete with the 5 series... The S40 is for the 3 series crowd.

If you went to the Volvo website, you'll note that the S40 is no longer available here. it also had a starting price in the lower $20K.

Size-wise, the S50 has fairly tidy proportions that place it more in-line with the 3-series and A4 than the much larger 5-series.

I'm eager to see the finished product, but I hope they take the challenge seriously. I enjoyed the S60R when it was released, from its functionally adjustable suspension to its gurgley turbo whine to its Pirelli p-zeros. And that instrument cluster?! LED-lit blue chronograph bezels were an excuse for many a late-night spin. Stiff competition doesn't begin to explain what Volvo faces with this project, but a refreshing entry from outside Germany may appeal to my fellow nonconformists.

Sweden is only successful in making Koenigseggs. Volvos are for golf players.... And.... God that thing is ugly!

Polestar makes incredible machines, they're just not that well known in the States. True most Volvo's aren't all that exciting but the last time Polestar did a Volvo (the C30) it was mind blowingly awesome. As for it's looks - you're looking at race cars - they're never pretty, just functional, so you can't say if the production car is pretty or not until we all get a good look at it.

Yes, they never create alternate words and usage in the UK. Observe the following dialogue... Pilot: Bunch of monkeys on your ceiling, sir! Grab your egg and fours and let's get the bacon delivered. General incomprehension. They look at each other Wingco: Do you understand that? Squadron Leader: No, didn't get a word of it. Wingco: Sorry old man, we don't understand your banter. Pilot: You know ... bally ten-penny ones dropping in the custard ... (searching for the words) um ... Charlie Choppers chucking a handful ... Clearly the German air raid is coming in. Opposing the use of 'hotted up' is perfectly reasonable because it just sounds stupid. If you were a old hot rodder, you would say it was 'breathed on.' Hey! Stop breathing on my engine you stupid yahoo!

RobbieP, you come from the UK? More cultural slang and lingo from there than you know, apparently, especially with your blasted incomprehensible Cockney rhyming slang and similar mish-mash. Don't be upperclass twit of the year. http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang/

Sounds pretty sweet, especially if it'll come with the buttery smooth inline 6 with a turbo. Hope it'll come with a real manual transmission.

Really looking forward to this car, I suspect that Polestar will have created a beast. If they can make 400 + hp work in a C30, then they should easily be able to make a screamer out of an S60!

Does it need to tease? As if we and the world don't already know what it looks like.

If it's half as good as the Polestar C30 concept, it will be absolutely brilliant. Any chance it can be RWD? Pretty please? Or an AWD system that's rear based. The system in the normal S60 isnt exactly sporting.
