Kia is warning owners of its 2009 Borrego (all 21,912 of them) that the SUV's brake pedal mounts could present a problem.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall action, the mounts are made of a "fiberglass composition" that could fracture in an accident. This could render the brakes unusable and require the driver to use the emergency brake or, in the wise words of the NHTSA, "experience a possible second impact."

Kia says it will contact owners of its short-lived SUV with instructions on how to get the part replaced free of charge. Scroll down for further details.

Summary:
KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 BORREGO VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2, 2008, THROUGH JANUARY 20, 2009, EQUIPPED WITH NON-ADJUSTABLE BRAKE PEDALS. Remedy:
KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE PEDAL MOUNT, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN DURING JUNE 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CONSUMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

This is the best vehicles I have ever owned hands down. Kia's timing was bad bringing this to market but worse in failing to market it effectively. My 2009 Borrego is 3 years old but competitive in virtually all categories with the Honda pilot and exceeds it for utility with the optional v8 power plant mine has. With some styling updates like more recently updated Kia models and more gears in the tyranny to improve fuel economy as other manufacturers are doing as of late they could easily bring this back to market successfully with a strong marketing campaign. After all they still sell and produce this internationally with different power trains so it's really not completely dead giving a glimmer of hope for those of us who love it...

I own one - other than a little rough riding (even though I switched the tires to Michelins instead of the stock Hankooks, it still didn't help) it has been an amazing vehicle. Cross-shopped (at the time) against Trailblazers and Mountaineers - the Borrego was much better than either of those, but it didn't have to do much to beat them. I have the V6 EX 4x4 model...

I've driven a couple of these as rentals, and I was always impressed. I'm not sure if that's because I had really low expectations going in or not. I'd take one over an Expedition.

Being a Vietnam veteran, when I saw KIA I immediately thought Killed In Action. I know it's not a thing founded in fact, just gives me bad vibes. I still buy vehicles from U.S. owned companies.
