The global luxury war has three fierce combatants, all German, all producers of amazing vehicles, and all serious about besting their two other rivals. While BMW has been winning as of late, the latest battle goes to Audi.

The Volkswagen luxury brand sold 125,200 vehicles in April, topping BMW's 121,476, according to Reuters. It was the first time Audi outsold BMW since January 2011. BMW still holds the year-to-date lead with 478,030 units sold, compared to 471,300 for April's champ, according to the report. BMW sales are up 10.1 percent for the year, while Audi's have risen by 11.7 percent.

Mercedes-Benz sits over 50,000 units behind at 418,246, according to Automotive News. Sales of Mercedes vehicles are up 9.7 percent on the year.

Audi's ascendency can be traced to China, where sales rose 44 percent in April, according to AN. European sales, by comparison, were only up 4.9 percent, with U.S. sales rising by 15 percent.

My BMW was so bad the dealer bought it back. Bought an A7 in February and love it. Quattro handling is unbelievable!

Er, I think BMW have been using their grille (i.e. the 'kidney' design) for longer than Audi's been using theirs...

About time. The styling of the current models of Audi beat BMW and trounce the ugly Mercedes models by a mile.

And they deserve it, they worked pretty hard for it. Any automaker that can make the R8, then the A5, then follow it up with the A7, does need some kind of recognition.

The sales crown fight always leads to some mind boggling discounts towards the end of the month and more so towards end of the year. Which makes one wonder what kinda margin do these larques normally have. I mean a friend bought an E class MSRP'd at 60k for 50k + TTL last week of Dec' 11 I was myself quoted 2500 below invoice on all 2012 at the same time of the year. This year it might get even more interesting.

All luxury mid-sized cars with premium badges are overpriced. At the end of the year, you can get an old stock model for up to $20k less if you buy with cash, and I am talking about cars with $70k MSRP. People think the Hyundai Genesis sedan is a great deal, but the truth is everyone else is 30 percent overpriced. Don’t go soft on the dealer when negotiating the purchase price because the dealer will not go soft on you when you take your car in for maintenance/repair.

That E-Class situation isn't uncommon. Germans start their new model years in August but typically still have stock from the previous MY through February of the next year. As a result, to clear inventories they heavily discount at the end of the year. If you are fine getting last year's model you can really make a killing.

Audi is a nice car.Too close to being a Volkswagen for this Mercedes purist. The fact that Audi outsold BMW And M-B just says they have a lot more affordable cars to offer. That will change when Mercedes offers the new A class and C class based 4 door coupe in the near future.

Sales reporting has lost its meaning in the last couple of year. The 3 german manufacturers can RDR thousands of vehicles at 11pm on month's close without much deliberation. MB and Audi both have higher shares in fleet sales, their numbers are probably more skewed than BMW's. Never the less, it is all about what they are willing to report. Not about what they actually sold. Is like they are Chevy or Toyota.
