A California bicyclist mounted a video camera on his bike to document a training ride with Brazilian racer Bruno Gregory. Instead, the video captured a hit-and-run accident in which the driver of a 1995 Acura slams into both cyclists and then speeds away.

The accident occurred on Old Tunnel Road in Berkeley last Wednesday, near the border of Berkeley and Oakland. Both cyclists escaped without serious injuries, according to KGO-TV.

The video – see above – shows traffic zipping past the two riders, before a black Acura crosses into the shoulder and topples both bikers. It also shows, when paused, the license plate of the vehicle.

Police used that information to arrest Michael Medaglia, 43, of Oakland for causing the hit-and-run accident. He reported the vehicle as stole – but not until after the accident had taken place.

Another perfect crime because now the police can figure out how these cyclists broke the law and got in the way of that poor car. At least that is the way it works around here.

I bicycle A LOT in Florida (Sarasota),,,,,,,,,,,I never bike on roads, bike lane or not,,,,,,,you have to be a complete moron to do so,,,,,,,,most drivers do not care about bikers (some actually loathe them) and have no regard for their safety,,,,There are many bike trails AND MILES and MILES of sidewalks in excellent shape for biking in suburban areas,,,,,,,just be careful of occasional walkers,,,,,,,,,When driving I'm very careful when I see bikers them but can't feel too sorry for them if they get clobbered by a careless driver (who represent most in Florida),,,,,,,,,,,,,being stupid (but trying to look cool),, IS REAL STUPID !! Rider beware !!

It's illegal to ride on the sidewalk in Florida. They will give you a ticket every time they get the chance. I lived in St. Pete for quite a while, and got tickets all the time. Legal status of bicycles (Sections 316.003(2), (10) and 316.2065(1), F.S.) A bicycle is classified as a vehicle. A person in control of a vehicle on a street or highway is a driver. As a driver, a cyclist must follow the traffic rules common to all drivers. As the driver of a bicycle, he must also obey regulations adopted specially for bicycles. A person riding a bicycle has all the rights applicable to any driver, except as to special regulations for bicycles. Maybe so in Sarasota, but not quite in St. Petersburg. The sidewalks here will get you killed.

White Wolf "All bicycles should be banned from public roads period! It is way too dangerous!" I agree. If it just saves ONE life it will be worth it.

Cause they cost money, need to plan, approve and so forth. Should they be toll bike lanes?

I love the fact that they say that they are 'making improvements" by installing a bike lane..... The fact is bike lane or no bike lane the driver came out of his lane and struck the bikes and fled the scene... How would a bike lane have prevented that?
