Police officers in Albuquerque, N. Mex. set the trap and 4 teens took the bait. A presumably unmarked car was left unlocked with the keys inside...and hidden cameras rolling. 4 teens couldn't resist the urge to take the vehicle for a joy ride.

"What if we go to jail for this? This is grand theft auto, dog!" exclaimed one of the teens.

As it turns out, the teens will be charged with auto burglary and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, according to ABC News.

      These guys sound intellectually challenged... even beyond being so stupid and bored as to steal a car. Lets hope they go to jail as minors, and re-examine their LOSER LIFE.

      Is it legal in New Mexico to leave the car unlocked with keys in and engine running? I understand aggressive policing and using bait, but there is a point when PD crosses the line. I'm not sure if they did cross the line into entrapment here, but it sure sounds tacky to me. Too much inducement. And effectively PD is saying they are trying to protect petty lawbreakers from bigger lawbreakers, because they just couldn't set it up without breaking the law.

        The car was NOT running. They leave it unlocked with the keys in the ignition. They were stupid to take it. Don't these morons have cable tv? They never heard of the show bait car?

        I agree. Also, I was told many years ago when I lived in the mountains of Massachusetts, and when people used to leave their doors unlocked because it was fairly safe to do that back then... if someone walked into my home and took something my insurance company wouldn't reimburse me. As long as my doors were unlocked I was inviting the world inside. Entrapment here too???

      Sorry, but if my son did this, he would pray the police keep him in jail, because his father and I would see to it that life, as he knows it, is over. I just don't get the mentality that thinks that you can take something that DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU. Don't get it at all.

        I agree. My kids grew up knowing that I would not bail them out, either.

      Okay, the video was funny, but if this is not entrapment, I don't know what is! MOST people don't leave their keys in an unlocked car in this day and age (note, I said MOST). I think the police should be MORE concerned about catching thieves stealing cars that are NOT police bait cars. I don't see any sense in this at all (other than the humor of the conversation in the car by these obviously non-educated idiots). A law student could, and SHOULD, get these charges dismissed. If they MUST be punished, it should be for the slaughtering of the English language. I'm just sayin'....

        @Kathleen
        It's only entrapment if the authorities trick somebody into doing something he wouldn't do on his own. These meat heads did this on their own. If the English language is so precious to you, read a dictionary.

        If you walk by a car that isn't yours, even if it has the keys in it, it's not yours. If they would do that to an unmarked cop car, they would do it to anyone else' car.

        @Kathleen
        you are right. You DONT know what entrapment is. In criminal law, entrapment is conduct by a law enforcement agent inducing a person to commit an offense that the person would otherwise have been unlikely to commit. In many jurisdictions, entrapment is a possible defense against criminal charges. However, there is no entrapment where a person is ready and willing to break the law and the government agents merely provide what appears to be a favorable opportunity for the person to commit the crime." They didnt know it was a police bait car and they stole it. So that means that they will a car period. They stole one once they will steal one again. How is a bait car different than any type of security camera? True story. Someone (a nighbor, stole a pretty expensive grill out of my backyard) I had a security camera instlled in my backyard because past issues. Was that entrapment. I HAD a pice of MY property stolen from MY land. THEY hopped over the fence and TOOK it. I HAD them on camera. They would have done it with or wothout the camera there. They just got caught red handed with the camera.

        @Kathleen
        What if it were your car, Kathleen? Would you claim entrapment at that point, or would you pursue legal recourse to recover your vehicle?

      Any and all of you who actually defend these kids should be deported for being stupid. Every day we are presented with the chance to make the right or wrong choice and clearly, these idiots made the wrong choice because they thought it would be fun to steal someone's property. Guilty, guilty, guilty. It's time we held people who choose to be bad, evil, unlawful, or stupid accountable for their lack of morals. I hope these kids get exactly the punishment they deserve.
