Matt Hagan, the reigning NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car champ, kicked off this weekend's Four-Wide Nationals qualifying session at zMAX Dragway in North Carolina with a bang. Hagan's funny car dropped an intake valve into one of its cylinders about halfway down the track and exploded, launching bits of engine and funny car across three of the four race lanes.

Amazingly, Hagan suffered no injuries and managed to keep his car in its lane. Upon exiting the vehicle, he can be seen ripping a piece of the car off and throwing it on the ground in frustration. Turns out he has a right to be frustrated: This is reportedly the third year in a row that Hagan has been involved in an explosion at the Four-Wide Nationals.

Scroll down to watch video of the explosion from a couple different angles, as well as gifs of the explosion and his memorable reaction.

I just thought of a good idea for putting that four wide to use: Stage a 4 way drag race between a Top Fueler, a Funny Car, and perhaps a Pro Mod and Pro Stock class as well. Then set the starting lights so that the "slower" machines get a big head start, but inevitably get passed by the finish line. Just imagine a 2000hp brute going for a 6 second timeslip, passed as if it were standing still by a nitromethane gargling 4 second demon! Sure, predictable results if they dont go boom (like above), but it would really put things into perspective. As for the explosion itself, glad the driver was scratch free, and it was cool how the bodywork just rippled and shed right off in the fireball. Without the "funny" bodywork, it's surprising how similar it looks to a Top Fueler.

Three for four! Can he make it four explosions over four years at four four wide nationals in a row? Haha, it'll buff out, in all seriousness glad he's ok after that one.

I've never seen a driver so angry walking out of his car after the motor exploded. Most are just thankful to be walking out of a car after the motor exploded.

He's the series champ and is having a very bad season, so far. He's obviously very frustrated. He had the best car out there for the last two seasons and now, well, he doesn't. Last year, he ran the first sub 4 second E.T in a Funny Car, and now his crew chief is totally "lost".

It looks like he was winning by at least a car length when it went boom...

Scratch that, from another angle its not a car length, but his nose was ahead of the black car to the right of him...

Hey hey.. Watch it, I actually think the VTEC in my car is quite sufficiently quick thank you. No better compromise when you need smooth operation for a date one second and then open it up the next, almost feels like I have two different engines in the same car the way that J35 V6 (2004 Pilot) screams when you open it up, oh and 103,000 miles it still runs like new and drives alot better than alot of new cars. Don't be dissin VTEC.
